4th gen Austinite here, never heard this term. We always called them dragrats.

I moved to Austin as a kid in '76. The term was for bums that were always selling acid on the drag (Guadalupe).

I remember as a kid town lake or lady bird lake or whatever the frick they call it now was crystal clear. You could easily see down 15' to 20'. Austin is a shell of itself now. Sad, but times change.

Looks better in the first pic. The second pic looks all claustrophobic.

No, they have them available. I am not the strongest swimmer, to tell the truth. Better safe than sorry. I'd say about half the people there, both children and adults, had them on.

Live in Houston. Love having Austin two hours away. Make my money in houston low cost of living. Get the Austin vibe when i need it, without having to live in it.

Houston is going through a ton of redevelopment in the inner city. Heights.

The entire state of Texas has a very bright future.

This is a pretty accurate and concise take. I lived there from '00 -'13 and was just back there last weekend visiting. It's a very different city, even from just a few years ago. It's still good, just different. We're considering moving back but the real estate is insane right now. I sold my house in '14 and it's gone up $100K since then. I would basically have to buy it back for double what I paid in '08.

I visited Austin 3 times in the 90's and really liked it a lot. And I hadn't been back until last month - it's just so different now. I figured it wouldn't be quite the same, but I wasn't prepared for the amount of difference.

The people I encountered in Austin just acted like Austin was so modern, with all the apps and smart cars and food trucks, and Louisiana is backwoods and we're all a bunch of hillbillies. They were trying to enlighten me the entire time. "Come on, lets go get some REAL food, like Torchy's! You're in Austin, Texas now, not the swamp!"

frick that.
