What Speer did as minister of production was truly remarkable. I only learned about the increased production stats in Doc Hilton’s class at LSU.
Speer did say in interviews after the War though that the bombings had a major impact. It’s scary to think what German military production would have been like without the bombing.

My mom’s uncle was a crewman on a downed bomber with all hands lost. I have his Purple Heart with a picture of the crew.

Go look at what Gen Kenney’s fighters were doing in the backwaters of the pacific theater in 1943 with the P-47 and tell me again they didn’t have a fighter with the range. They absolutely could have with the will to build a proper fuel tank in the field as they did on the other side of the world.
Though a great airframe in its own right, the P-51 was cheaper to build so it obviously won out. Kind of like the Corsair vs Hellcat debate.

My grandmother's first husband, who was like 21 at the time, was shot down and killed in a B-24 during Ploiesti. My Dad, me, my siblings, and my kids wouldn't be here right now if that hadn't happened. It's a weird, fatalistic feeling.
