Uh oh
the article is focused on Google, but Comcast, Time Warner, and all the other a-hole cable companies who are doubling down on being total cocksuckers are the ones who should be scared. can't. fricking. wait.
this is the worry. those cable companies are going to grease so many wheels to stop this expansion
crony capitalism

AT&T isn't letting Google Fiber's expansion plans go unanswered. The telecom giant has announced that it's looking at bringing its GigaPower internet service to as many as 21 additional big cities and their nearby municipalities. There's some potential for direct competition with Google, as both companies are looking into gigabit access for key urban areas like Atlanta, San Antonio and San Jose. However, it's clear that AT&T is taking some initiative here -- it's also exploring rollouts in Chicago, Los Angeles and other hubs that aren't currently on its rival's roadmap.

Like Google, AT&T still wants to discuss its intentions with community leaders. The carrier won't launch in a given area unless it sees that there's enough demand, network infrastructure and "receptive policies," so there's a chance that your town won't make the cut.

I just wish my ATT DSL worked quickly and consistently

Assholes
Through

Through
AT&T's idea of fiber to the building is spending millions on equipment that will pass data over 50 year old cat3 cable instead of spending the same ammount or less to install actual fiber. The telcom field is full of know it all assholes but AT&T is on a level all their own.

I have att and the internet sucks balls but the television service is the best in the biz

I've had very few problems with UVerse outside of the price. Pretty glad to see Houston at least made the "potential" list after Google went to Austin and San Antonio first

outside of directv I presume

Reverse for me with comcrap. It's a ripoff for TV, but the internet is outstanding and worth the price.

AT&T's 'Expansion' of 1 Gbps to 100 Cities is a Big, Fat Bluff
It's a PR move. Nothing more.
AT&T's 'Expansion' of 1 Gbps to 100 Cities is a Big, Fat Bluff
quote:
In short, if your city plays nice and gives AT&T what they want legislatively (namely gut consumer protections requiring they keep serving DSL users they don't want so they can focus on more profitable wireless) you'll get 1 Gbps fiber to a few high-end developments and apartment buildings. As an added bonus, your local politician can hold a lovely cord-cutting ceremony where he or she pretends to be encouraging the broadband networks of tomorrow (while in reality doing the exact opposite).
quote:
We're in the heart of the age of "fiber to the press release" and 1 Gbps mania, where all you need to do is simply mention 1 Gbps and you get a ticker-tape parade and a statue in the town square without having to deliver a single byte. AT&T's certainly counting on that reaction from the press and public. Look for specifics as to how many users will actually get 1 Gbps "Gigapower" service and at what cost to AT&T, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any whatsoever. That's because "Gigapower" is about 10% actual broadband, and 90% finely-manicured bullshite.
It's a PR move. Nothing more.
quote:
The press release admits as much if you look carefully. "This expanded fiber build is not expected to impact AT&T’s capital investment plans for 2014," notes AT&T. That's what they noted last year, and will surely say the same thing next year. In fact, AT&T's been reducing their fixed-line CAPEX each year. What kind of major 1 Gbps broadband expansion doesn't hit your CAPEX? One that's either very tiny, or simply doesn't exist.

The apps att offers makes it stand up to any competitor. Their was something like ten hd channels dedicated to the masters, they have all the soccer channels... I wish it was cheaper but overall it's pretty awesome IMO

directv has all of those.

he supports "consumer protection" laws, so he's probably a fricking idiot or an ideologue who can only think emotionally

I'll believe it when I see it.

I hate AT&T internet. Give me Comcast all day.

Local Nashville news last night said it's coming here. It's already in Austin, TX.

The only way fiber is going to become much more prominent is either through an unorthodox deployment like Google Fiber, or through muni efforts like in Lafayette. Incumbents just are not going to invest in new infrastructure when they can keep charging extortion level prices for anemic service via their duopolies.
