Yeah at best my 10 yo is doing half of these things without being prompted. No way is she consistently doing all that.

But the point is valid…when my 18yo daughter was in 5th grade, she had a friend over and microwaved some pizza rolls and the friend flipped out thinking she was going to burn the house down…turns out she wasn’t allowed to do anything in the kitchen.

Age doesn’t matter . . . The kid just has to know that if they frick up the given responsibility, they are getting their arse kicked. Thus, at whatever age they have a legit fear of the consequences from the parent.

Conversely, since some parents want to be best friends instead of parents, some kids will never have that fear of the consequences.

Dad? This is why me and my sister were left alone during the summer while my parents worked at 6 and 8. A healthy fear of consequences. Our two major rules were don't use the oven and stay on our property.

Depends on the kid. I'd leave one alone at 10 but the others not until 13 because he's a jackass and she's......a girl.

Times have changed. When I was about 8 I would leave the house and mom would say , be home by noon for dinner. I could ride my bike anywhere just as long as I got back before noon. But, oddly, I could be in the most remote spot in the huge neighborhood and if she needed me before noon, she would immediately find me.

Absolutely. It's too damn hot to be lugging babies around. Just gotta leave the windows cracked for some air flow.

He wakes up with an alarm at around 6:20. He’s dressed and ready for breakfast by 6:30. My wife gets home around then from her gym. One of us will make breakfast. He checks that we’ve signed his homework and gets his water bottle ready. When he gets home he changes into play clothes and immediately starts homework. When he finishes it’s a snack that he grabs and play time. He will either get on his iPad or go to his room to play. We eat around 6 and usually watch a show (currently Bluey) or a movie together. At about 8:30 he goes shower (and sometimes asks if he needs to wash his hair which he hates to do). If he has time he will go to bed to watch something on his own and sets a time for 9:15 to turn it off. He will be 9 in November.

I have an almost 7 year old, and there’s not a chance in hell he would stay home, or that I would let him stay at home alone. He’s a pretty timid kid, but a rule follower and a people pleaser. As an only child, he’s mature for his age but even then it’s still at least 4 years from being on the table.
As a kid growing up in the 80’s, I was left at home around 9-10 with older siblings.

Friend of mine has a brother who married an Eastern European girl. They have an infant, definitely younger than 6 months. She leaves the kid alone all the time to do whatever. Told the MIL the kid can’t move so it shouldnt go anywhere.

My son is 8. I recently asked him to come to Rouses with me this summer break, but he wanted to stay home playing video games.

I told him I would only be gone 15 mins if he wanted to stay. He agreed. It actually took around 30 mins from door to door, but when I came home he said “I didn’t even know you left yet”.

My older sister was maybe 10. We weren't locked in the house either. I was gone on my bike all day with the neighborhood kids.
