Basically, I'd wager that most of the people looting have never shoplifted before. But once you see everyone else doing it, then the desire to fit in hits hard. We as a human race are easily manipulated. You can lose all sight of right or wrong just by being around too many people doing the wrong thing.
The looting has zero to do with the protests. All it took was about 5 people to run into the store and start stealing, which led to hundreds starting to do the same
