Believe me, I know.
Only reason I didn't go to nuke school. I ended going TAR as a PN

My younger brother got in power school with a score in the mid 80s, but he had to take an extra test. I think you need something in the 90s for automatic.

The recruiter is the used car salesman of the Armed Forces; he/she has quotas to fill. DO NOT let the recruiter talk him into doing something that he does not want to do. DO NOT let him go to basic "Open General". Before he signs enlistment papers he should have a AFSC/MOS picked out or at a maximum only of (3) options; none of those should be open ended to a career field. No offense to any of my military brothers or sisters but recruiters can be a little shady.
Congratulations on his decision to serve!

Yep, under no circumstances do you join undesignated. Especially with a score that will qualify him for almost any job that he choses(I don't know his GT score, but it's probably decent if he made an 81)
Posted on 11/28/16 at 3:39 pm to LSUBanker
he should be able to qualify for any job, mos, etc with that score

I wouldn't worry about his mechanical score for MD
he needs to worry about getting at least 3.85 gpa preferably a 4.0
at least a 32 on the mcat i suppose

I got a 98 and I really didn't take the test that seriously.
Not bragging just saying that 81 isn't very good.

FWIW, I had this same thing happen from my neighbor's tree (obviously I knew who it was so that alone is easier than your situation) but the damage was to a very expensive tennis court light pole on my property. I went round and round with insurance and lawyers and found it just isn't worth it.
Not bragging? Sure, whatever you say.

ETA: Oh shite, it gets worse.

Like I said, it wasn't bragging. I just take standardized tests like a mofo. Got a 96 percentile on the LSAT and still sucked at law school.

What's amazing is I've seen a bunch of kids struggling just to get a 36 or whatever the absolute minimum was back when I joined.

had a kid in my basic platoon, who resembled mr. peabody, supposedly he was telling other recruits in basic that he made an 18.
i had one kid in my platoon, who graduated with a ba in history and wanted to be a combat engineer. he had a fetish for ied's, somehow i convinced him i was actually a cia agent.

Recruiters are VERY shady and do have quotas, BUT during my time recruiting I never had a quota for a specific job, just a category. Meaning above a 50 test score or below.
Keep in mind if he goes reserve or guard he will be very limited on the jobs available to him. He will only be offered jobs/positions available in the units he can be assigned.
As for active, with an 81 he will be qualified for plenty, but will only be offered jobs that are available during the time he is planning to enlist. There's over 270 jobs in the Army, I've never seen more than 30 presented to an applicant regardless of test score. Again, it depends on what's available. Test scores are good for 2 years for all branches regardless of who he took the test for.

Just a Pro-Tip(s) for his experience in Lackland AFB.
When the TI asks him why he joined the military, the correct answer is "To protect and defend the Constitution of the USA", or "to serve my country". Not money for college, benefits or job experience.
Do not volunteer for anything, you will be assigned what you need to do. Basic training is not the place to be a leader or a hero. It will cause more grief than it is worth.

yep.
its best just to shut up and fly under the radar (you won't) but better to at least try to do so and not volunteer for every damn thing. plenty of people will do so

Sir, I am retired from the USAF and was the Operations officer at a recruiting squadron for 3 years. Yes, 81 is a very good score. Unless he bombed on one of the subdivisions of the test he should qualify for just about any job the air force has to offer.
You said he wanted to be an MD. I assume you don't mean "doctor" as you also mentioned his mechanical scores.
In any case good luck to your son, the air force was a fricking blast. Best years of my life.

I volunteered for all kinds of shite. Kp or details were usually much chiller than training.
