Short of going to Law Enforcement, is there an easy way to trace the IP address back to a human or physical address?
Yes, that IP address is linked to a physical address of the modem it was handed off from.
Except.....IP address are recycled, so unless you know the date and time of the hack AND you get the ISP to hand over that data, you won't get anything.
even then, there is unsecured wifi as an excuse.

DHCP ones are. Business connections and even some residential (I had the same Eatel IP address the 6 years I lived in Gonzales) hand out static IPs. It all depends.

Serious question
I have confirmed that a case of identity theft of a person on the list. Looks like credit card fraud too. The IP address has been confirmed to not be the IP address (or email) of the credit card owner's. The person only has an IPhone and computer. No work computer.
Short of going to Law Enforcement, is there an easy way to trace the IP address back to a human or physical address? I have already sent a letter to the email address on the list asking the person to come clean for the sake of the person's family. If I can trace it, I will. Appreciate any assistance or legitimate technical advice.
Give us the email address. That could very well happen.
Also there's names on there like the HPC guy and some well known names that are fudged. Like Noel Hammett. I'm pretty certain those two dudes didn't sign up with their names like that.

the fallout from this on both sides will be interesting. If they are competent hackers they will never be found.
The sony hack huge and on the front page for weeks, those guys are still on the loose.

The customer would have received a bill or notice from the credit card company. Pretty sure that poster found someone they know well on that list and is verifying.... And then who knows what.

Agreed. The guy in the podcast I posted was a teen when he shut down amazon, Dell, cnn, etrade, eBay I think and others
And he said the only reason he got caught was for bragging about it
