Letter from Councilman calling for resignation.

quote:

Like many of you, I am disappointed, angered, and embarrassed by the recent allegations against our Parish President. My concern is not the legality of the actions by President Matassa, but whether his actions were ethical and right. Elected officials have the responsibility to ethically serve the people we represent. Thus, I do not feel is it necessary to wait until these allegations have run their legal course. The actions of our President have embarrassed Ascension Parish, eroded the public’s trust in the elected officials of Ascension Parish, harmed our ability to attract new business, impaired our ability to hire qualified employees and become a distraction. For these reasons, I believe it is in the best interest of Ascension Parish for President Matassa to resign his position immediately.

This is a sad time for Ascension Parish. I have gotten to know President Matassa and his family personally over the past several months. These are good people that care about Ascension Parish. It hurts me to ask for his resignation. But, I must follow my conscience and do what is best for the parish.

Maybe, this is the way politics works. Maybe, I am an outsider. Maybe, I don’t understand the way Ascension Parish government works. But, maybe this is a time for change in Ascension Parish.

Aaron J. Lawler
Ascension Parish Councilman District 7

His lawyer said it was just a loan and an offer for a job... same thing you'd do for any friend. Nothing to see here.

Of course. Doesn't he run a loan business? It's just in the ordinary course of business. A cash loan, a job. All for friends.

Yep, sure. With all that good ole public education, the public is sure to buy that.

Matassa doesn't run the loan business, Olin Berthelot does.

Which makes it odd that the parish president would be present for a "loan" that just happened to have an affidavit stating Lawson's withdrawal from the election.

Just saw that Saterlee will make a motion of "no confidence" at tonight's meeting.

I was wondering when someone was going to do this. Matassa hasn't been to work in almost a week (although that is probably a good thing).

I don't have cable anymore but want to watch meeting where this is going to go down (with some popcorn).

Does anyone know if it's available to watch online?

It's the damnedest coincidence. The government access channel here in Ascension Parish, Channel 21, was off the air about the time the meeting started, then it came back on about 6:30 with the non-stop loop of PSA announcements that are still airing an hour later. FWIW, this council meeting is in Donaldsonville.

Allegedly, there was no motion of no confidence because of some 24 hour rule. The meeting was conveniently not televised. Also, all elected officials e-mail addresses have been removed from the AP gov website or some spam filters installed all of the sudden. Some real shenanigans going on there

This is bullshite. The people of Ascension Parish deserve better.

Who do these politicians think they are, some kind of monarchy? They should have to answer or least be accessible to the people who, you know, they represent. Not to mention the same folks that elected them to their positions.

They were gone for several days.

Also, apparently the publisher of Pelican Post is running for a seat.
quote:

Your writer has, against everything he holds sacred, qualified for elective office (and befitting that momentous personal decision I will address you in the 1st Person). While I have little to no chance of winning Gonzales’ Division D Council seat on November 8, I’m compelled to run.

Division D is “designated as a black minority division” and that cannot stand in a democracy based upon Equal Protection of the Law for every citizen.
I learned Gonzales Municipal Code, Ordinance 2-3 excludes all other races from pursuing election to Division D while researching a piece I was writing at the height of recall fever in 2014. I was flabbergasted that such legislation, unconstitutional on its face, could have passed into law in the city I’ve called home for 49 years. I considered challenging the ordinance in court but the costs would be prohibitive. Qualifying for the seat cost only $75. Let some party sue to disqualify my candidacy, I reasoned.

And so, here I am…Candidate for Council Division D, City of Gonzales and, assuming I am not disqualified pursuant to another’s legal challenge, my candidacy is the threshold victory I seek.
Which is fortunate since it’s the only victory I’m likely to win.
I’m no joiner and to win election you have to be a member of the club. I subscribe to Marxist philosophy (Groucho, not Karl): “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.”

I will solicit no contributions and don’t anticipate opening a campaign account. I’ll have no money to purchase signs which only clutter up our city anyway. I won’t bother you at home to pander for your vote and won’t stuff campaign literature in your mail-box or hang it from your door knob.
I will, though, offer my ideas in Pelican Post with regularity; and I offer unfettered access to my opponents to do the same.

Matassa is really something else. One week after the election, he hired the son of his bribing partner without advertising for the position, which is a big civil service no no.
quote:

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -
Exactly one week after Kenny Matassa was sworn in as Ascension Parish President early this year, the son of one of his close friends was hired as the parish’s Director of Recreation. The job was not publicly advertised and, therefore, Brandon Berthelot, son of Olin Berthelot, was the only person who applied for the job.

quote:

When contacted Friday for comment, Ascension Parish councilman Daniel “Doc” Satterlee said the whole situation smells “fishy.” Satterlee said he could summarize his comments in four words: “you do the math.”

“It’s troubling that we would appoint someone into such a high office so quickly after an election,” he said. “I think it would be more prudent to take our time and make sure we have the right person for the job. That is not to say Mr. Berthelot is not the right person for the job, but we have no way of knowing that.”

He really is. Here is another instance where he fired the Planning Commission Director, Ricky Compton, based on a campaign contribution promise.

quote:

Compton was referring to a recording of prominent land owner Dempsey Pendarvis. Pendarvis can clearly be heard in the recording saying he orchestrated the firing of the planning director. In fact, he makes it sound like Matassa had no choice. "Let me tell you in life Kenny, you made a commitment to me and numerous other people who brought you money that you would run Ricky Compton off," the recording states. One of those people who brought Matassa money was Pendarvis. Campaign finance reports show he donated at least $500 to the Matassa campaign. Pendarvis went on to say that money was given with a promise. "In life if you stick to your agreements, you're not going to have any problems," Pendarvis said. "If you don't stick to your agreements, you'll have problems right off the bat."

quote:

"I talked to him (Compton) and said I was disappointed in some of the content, but I... um you know... I make all my own decisions and move forward," Matassa said.

Basically, this Pendarvis guy was pissed at Compton, the planning director for not removing an exit in the Pelican Crossing subdivision that connected to the River Ridge subdivision.

Pendarvis developed Pelican Crossing and didn't want the lower income residents that populated River Ridge to be able to drive through Pelican Crossing. Even though the entrance/exit was already in existence.

Another good story how Ascension parish recreation dept has been used for campaign repayment. Can't post link from phone.
