Wonder if anyone has been to the Hot Air Balloon Festival? I'm only interested in the early morning hot air balloon viewing. where is the best location for viewing?

I saw one in the air above Gonzales yesterday. thought maybe I had missed it.

Be prepared for a traffic problem (jam) similar to the LSU area after a football game if you go to Lamar Dixon. It took me an hour to go 3 miles last year ... and I know all of the short cuts around there. The best viewing is based on how close you want to be to them at lift off .

Climb the water tower and watch from there.

Assuming morning liftoff is from LD (not some remote location) I would go to the parking lot at Home Depot. It's across the interstate from the LD area with an un-obdtructed view of the sky in that direction.

Any suggestions on viewing locations for viewing from a distance? Not really interested in the festival. Would rather just get close enough to check out the balloons in flight.

I don't want to go to LD. I just wanted to have a good place to stop and view the sky with the balloons

Find out which direction they will flying you could see them from a mile or 2 away from the LD. Some years they fly directly over our house in Gonzales. Some years they take a little bit different track. Also, there is a target site where they all head to to drop bean bags or something. I think that is usually posted on facebook.

They don't always lift off from the same place. Lift off location depends on weather conditions (wind direction and speed) and the target location. You're going to need some inside info on the actual daily competition to locate the lift off locations.

Didn't it used to be later? Still seems way too hot for the hot air balloon festival.

Someone posted that Central Primary School was the targets

If you go early enough you will be fine, Lamar Dixon has tons of parking.

Not sure how this competition is being run, but in the past, the targets are different every day/time.

Nope...if anything, it used to be earlier. I'm thinking it was in August when it was at Pennington.
ETA: Yep, in 2011 it was August 5-7 LINK

The target is Central Primary School. They start at 7am Saturday morning. Anybody got an idea of what time they would be nearing Central Primary?
