Yeah, in these peaceful times, who needs defense?

No doubt. There are enough shitbirds who volunteer. Forget making it compulsory.

So whatever the current administration decides is the flavor of the week doesn't matter. Let's go kill all the Catholics in Rome because the Vatican released some anti-American rhetoric. Oh well...I'm an American. Better man the frick up.

But what if I believe we shouldn't be fighting the current war? There's a pretty big contradiction there.

Indeed. And when one recalls that so very many of our Vietnam war casualties were killed in action while performing an heroic act trying to protect his brothers in arms, it's very humbling to me.

I do my part to help our Vietnam vet brothers by participating in Veterans service groups.

In fact, for everyone who wishes that they had joined the military years ago to serve, there's something you all can do here and now -- you can call you local Veterans' service organization and ask about volunteering. Or perhaps you live near one of our Veterans War Homes -- maybe you could volunteer there.

Here's the link with info about our War Vets Homes. These are homes for disabled vets who can no longer live without assistance.

But how many of these, "Gee I wish that I had joined the military and served when I had the chance too bad I can't now" will make a call and see about helping a veteran service organization?

I wish I had joined the air force or navy then started college at 21 or 22 instead of 17.

I was way too immature at LSU.

Drank too much and just wanted to party since I was such a nerd in HS>

Hopefully one or two more than before this thread was started. But your point is well taken.

Anyone else feel this way?

NO ... because I DID. ...I didn't want to. I was having a lot of fun. 18, 19, 20 years old with a car and a job! Life was good ... and then a letter came in the mail from the U.S. Gov't. It seems that my services was needed. AWWWWW, HELL!! And away I went. 2 years active and 4 years inactive.

I didn't read all the pages between 1 and now so all I'll add at this point is that experience changed me for the good and is a big part of who I am today. God bless America .... please.

I can think of A LOT of people who I wouldn't trust with a firearm at 30, much less 18. Even with training.

I love how people try to say they would have served in the military order to make themselves feel better. As a current active duty personnel, I resent the notion that you (generalization) think that you can do what I/we do. A couple of times a year during some patriotic event you feel like you coulda/shoulda/woulda. The fact is, you didn't. I don't do what I do for the recognition, I damn sure don't do it for the pay.

1) topgun is for Naval aviators

2) he didn't say fighter pilot, it's not THAT hard to become a regular pilot in the Air Force

As an army veteran, all I did was drink, whore-around, participate in group LSD taking and sleep with some of my buddies wives. It was a good time but not something that college didn't offer.

Sounds like my time in the Army, minus the sleeping with buddies wives part. My liver is still recovering from my Army escapades.
