Are you familiar with the phrase ‘hit a lick of the snake’?

Usually meaning not working, having to work or applying effort.

Ex: It was so hot today we didn’t hit a lick of the snake.

Could be. Here it is pronounced ‘hit eh lick uh duh snake’, roughly.

I have never seen it in print.

I’ve heard it all my life. But as prior posters have said its ‘hit a lick at a snake.’

It is "hit a lick at a snake".

It is not stupid or yankee.

The lick being the "lick" inflicted by a stick or a hoe or shovel on a snake.

There was a day not too long ago that no snake was spared and the sight of one sent most people looking for a weapon to kill the snake. You were particularly lazy if you let a snake pass.

I've heard "hit a lick", but never heard the snake part.

Hadn’t heard it in a long time. Used to hear it all the time in the 70’s oilfield.
