re: Are you closer with your family than your SO?

It is a hot button topic, but for your marriage, your spouse is supposed to come first. This doesn't mean save your spouse before your kids in a burning house or take care of your spouse before your kids (your spouse is an adult, your kids aren't).. but it means your relationship with your spouse should be of #1 importance. If it isn't, you'll find yourself in a pretty lonely marriage. Especially when the kids grow up, find partners, and leave you behind like they're supposed to do.
I'm not religious, but I recall them teaching this in the church as well. One of the only parts I agree with.

If you put anyone above your SO , then you have chosen the wrong partner.

This is a much better worded version of what I was trying to say. Thank you. Very well explained.

No woman of quality will ever marry you.

I'd have to say I'm equally close with all of my family. I'd have to decide based on the situation. If there was ever a conflict, I'd side with the one I thought was in the right, and do my best to fix the situation.
That being said, my family isn't trashy and I didn't marry trash, so I don't see this ever coming up.
I will say that both my family and my inlaws side with me over my wife. There's been one or two times where my wife, being a woman and suffering from estrogen poisoning, has reacted irrationally about something and when she mentioned it to her parents they listened intently, and then nicely explained to her that she was wrong in her thinking and I was right. It pissed her off a little for a bit but then she the estrogen poisoning went in remission and she could think clearly. She admitted she was wrong.

1. You are bad at English/spelling.
2. ...a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
Just sayin'.

this is something i saw happen to my parents when we all moved out of the house (5 kids)
they had to almost start over because their entire focus was on us for so long and not enough on their relationship
it was weird watching them "get to know each other" again but they managed to rekindle their relationship
I saw that and actively make sure that it will never happen with my wife and i
we budget ALOT for babysitters because we try to go out and spend time away from the kids at least a couple times a month, we get lunch on weekdays often and prioritize our relationship and friendship so that when the kids do leave the house (in 18 years) we'll be okay with is being just us again

Is there a running count on the number of times "alot" is used in this thread, like it is a real word or something?

Since this gurl is probably your 1st cousin, they are one in the same...

Actually the exact opposite. I'm closer to my wife's family than my own.
Posted on 4/13/17 at 11:19 am to Hawgnsincebirth55
My family knows things about me my SO doesn't know, and my SO knows things about me my family doesn't know.
If you're married, you're supposed to be closer to your spouse than anyone else. It doesn't always work that way, but if it doesn't, there's usually trouble ahead.

I feel like if you chose your spouse over your parents it shows you had a strained relationship in the past
I have a very good relationship with my parents, especially my mother. I'm a mama's boy. However, my mother knows that my wife comes first and always will. If you're a Christian person (I am not, I was raised that way and still attend mass but I do not believe in the supernatural aspect of the religion anymore), the bible says a man is to leave his father and mother a cleave unto his wife. Likewise for the woman. I made an oath to my wife and it is one I will keep to the grave.
It wouldn't be easy to turn my back on my family, but if given no choice I would in a heartbeat.

This is the most backward way of looking at a relationship. You are 100% supposed to sever your ties with your parents and cleave to your wife. Your wife should 100% be your top priority. With that attitude IDK why anyone would actually want to be with you long term.

Glad to see there are still people who know how to properly prioritize. I thought it had completely fallen out of style.
1. SO/marriage
2. Children
3. Rest of family

Your wife is your immediately family. As are any kids y'all have. The relationship between you and your wife comea before that between your parents, siblings, and your own children.
Bible bs aside, she's by your side before kids, during, and she'll be all you have after. Cherish and nurture that relationship
