Are we in a holding pattern until a vaccine or cure is developed?

Let's say the goal is to have the stay-at-home orders lifted on June 1. Suppose only 25% of the U S. population has gotten the virus by then. The virus is still going to be out there on June 1. Are we going to see another surge and stress on medical systems when the remaining 75% are exposed?

People hate to hear it but this is the new normal. How can we really expect this thing to be cleared up in a month or so when the case numbers are expanding daily? There will be way more cases at the end of this month than there are right now.

The goal is sooner than that I would imagine, and nobody knows for sure how this is going to play out. I hope by April 15, a lot more will be known about where we are headed.

No I dont think so. I think we are on hold till we get better and more testing. Start isolating those individuals and then start slowly opening things back up.

No.

People will still be shut down if it's that bad. Assuming a 1% mortality rate, that would be 800,000 deaths in two months.

Until we find a consistent treatment, yes.
Waiting to find a true cure, frick no.
People won't be able to last that long, myself included.

First off, the issue here is that crap can go quickly downhill fast by the way this thing spreads because everyone it comes into contact with can get it.
If in a month or two, 20 -30% of the population has it and can't get it, suddenly that rate of spread drops way down.
By flattening the curve at the beginning and giving the virus less targets later, you flatten the curve even with things getting opened up later.

The dirty little secret is that no one knows. Everyone is spitballing and hoping for the best at this point.

May 1 is the goal at least for Louisiana, but other parts of the state outside Nola are starting to get hard, so that date could get pushed back.

JBE is going to extend the order to May 1 or April 30, but hopefully two more weeks will enable the experts to better predict where we're headed. We shall see.

Idk if everyone is hoping for the best. Some people seem to have a weird doomsday fetish so they are obsessed with this thing being the end of times or lasting forever

Major problem here is that you can infect people several days before you have symptoms.

The goal is to reduce the stress on the health care system. People don't seem to realize that there is only enough capacity to treat an extremely small percentage of the population at any given time. Isolating people prevents the spread of the virus and gives time for those that do have the virus to stop being carriers/transmitters. Number of cases (both reported and unreported) go down. Health care system is not taxed. In June or whatever if an outbreak does arise it will probably be localized and more resources can be dedicated to contain it.
