Do it with a heavy backpack on, then come back and report.

Exercises that incorporate natural motions are more effective for muscle tone, which is what the OP is trying to accomplish.

10-4. All exercises that incorporate an unnatural movement aren't worth doing.

To me nothing about a treadmill is natural either. The treadmill kills my knees and back, but I am ok when actually jogging.

Don't do cardio at all. Just lift.

& don't use machines to lift just use free weights.

Leave the cardio to the women.

Most elliptical's use a full body motion of moving your arms as well, that is one of the reasons for the higher calorie count.
Considering when you put in your weight they go on what the average person your size should burn going at the speed you are going, it isn't going to be accurate.

FWIW most of the LifeFitness brand machines at my gym are accurate within +/- 15%. Usually better than that though.

At least for the stairmills and treadmills. I leave the ellipticals for the women.

How do you know? I noticed my usual stairmaster is faster now at the same settings, so they must have adjusted or calibrated it somehow

Simple. Compared it to my Suunto heart rate monitor.

Elliptical machines are a waste of space. They are good for old ladies and fat people because all you're doing is carrying momentum.
Stair master is much more effective.

Pick someone in the gym that resembles where you see yourself when you reach your goals and watch what they are doing.

I like the stairclimbers much better.

Feel like I get a better workout on them and it helps me build up cardio endurance for when I go hiking.
