Doctors? Yes.
Medical doctors that can save your life? No.
Learn the difference. Dentists are like DPT's are like Pharm.D's are like Ph.D's are like Me.D's etc....

I dropped out of school to be a doctor in the family medical practice.
It's all about who you know

It all depends on how you define "real doctor".
They are not "real doctors". But neither is a plastic surgeon.

How is this even up for debate? Can your friend not define DDS or DMD?
A lot of them take preventive care to extraordinary (expensive and unnecessary) levels, though.

I diagnose illness, write scripts, perform surgery, etc..
I was able to drop out of college, and do this because
like I said it's really just all about who you know.

Dentists are not medical doctors; they are doctors of dentistry. They, like medical doctors, can write prescriptions. I think that qualifies them to be classified as doctors.
Posted on 1/14/15 at 1:17 pm to Berry McCaulkiner
Yes.
They can administer anesthesia and perform surgical procedures.

The debate is over the semantics of the word doctor.
And it is a tired debate at that.

PA’s do not have as much autonomy as far as writing Rx’s (I believe they need an MD to sign off)

Lot of bad info up in here.
Dentists are doctors. They are NOT physicians. DDS = Doctor of Dental Surgery.
Oral Surgeons go to dental school and med school and are the only dentists that are both MD and DDS
There are some schools that give a DMD which is = a DDS not a MD
Dentist do diagnose patients and write prescriptions and perform surgeries.
Dentist school and medical school are almost identical for the 1st 2 years. They take the same courses and even share some of the same teachers.
After 4 years a dentist can be done and go practice, as can a MD. Or a dentist can go specialize for another 2-10 years, as can a MD.
Dentists obviously don't deal with normal sicknesses and life threatening matters as physicians which is why they aren't considered "doctors".
