The dishwasher thread has me thinking. Do you replace appliances (such as a dishwasher) when the old one is still working? I have a loud dishwasher, but just run it at bedtime.

If it still gets the dishes clean and you aren't displeased, why replace it?

My 10-yo dishwasher leaked 2 weeks ago (probably leaked a couple of weeks but I didnt know) and ruined our kitchen floor.
It cost me a couple thousand out of pocket.
I will be replacing my dishwasher every 5 years from now on.

That’s got to be a hell of an alimony payment.

Just replaced a refrigerator because the wife didn’t like it.

I’m not replacing it. Just wondering if people bought new appliances while the old ones were working, or replaced as they broke down.
I also have a 15 yo Maytag washer/dryer that’s never been replaced (or needed to be), while I’ve had friends buy the fancy HE washers.

Not sure how old but modern appliances are shitty compared to those made in the 80s-90s and prior.

You get that washer fixed no matter what. It's light years better than anything they make today.

Back then, they made stuff to last and that could be worked on. Now they just basically consider everything disposable.

I can't say I have ever changed an appliance that was not broken. Probably should replace them periodically though, as I will have to replace before I sell the house anyway and I might as well be enjoying some updated shite if I am going to have to pay for it anyway.

Damn .... we just replaced our dishwasher.
Just replaced our washing machine too.
Quality is going downhill fast for the old American standard appliances.
Did you know a woman designed and invented the first dish washing machine because the help was too rough on her good china? Wisconsin lady I do believe, who’s husband died and left her broke. I think her company went on to be named Whirlpool if I am not mistaken. Seem to remember my appliance repairman grandfather telling me that story when I was a kid. He said Whirlpool was the best back then.
All I know is that GE and Fridgidare are dog crap these days.

You didn’t have to go all “Paul Harvey, the rest of the story” on me. I’m just trying to keep the old lady from bitching about new appliances.

I don't see the need to replace appliances that are still working properly. When they break, then it's time to bite the bullet and get a new one.
I fixed my washer and dryer for about 4 years before getting a new set. I diagnosed what was wrong, bought the parts and did the work myself, so not much out of pocket expense before they finally gave up the ghost.
When my dishwasher died, it was a major part and not cost effective to repair, so I replaced it. The new unit is sooo much quieter than the old one.
