Free speech and municipal statues are not EXACTLY the same thing.

It was erected just as the Democrats had taken over, and this was an obvious political statement.

So which is it? Is it a political statement or not?

I love it when "conservatives" use big brother to take down political statements/monuments they disagree with.

fricking retard.

It's a carry over joke from the first time the idiots were protesting. Several were interviewed and they thought it was Stonewall.

Go read my posts then. I made the point last night and when it first happened. I was waiting for someone to finally call me out.

My post: "Those idiots thought they were protesting Stonewall Jackson Square, not Andrew. That's how stupid this whole thing is"

A small government conservative isn't for using taxpayer money to do stupid shite like this.

Nah, that's not what small government conservative means. Maintaining public municipal property doesn't disqualify one from being conservative.

Dude, just let it go. It's a statue, and it will never be more than that no matter how hard you pretend and melt.

Not really sure I understand the nostalgia for the confederacy and the desire to hold on to relics that represent an insignificant time in the city's history in the grand scheme of things. New Orleans is a city that's almost 300 years old and was around for over century before the confederacy which lasted all of a year in these parts before the Union regained control.

Naw man, if we don't have a series of statues representing four specific years in the city's history, history is ruined.

How familiar are you with the battle of liberty place?

What about the monument that was removed and "stored" thereafter?

Because that's exactly what is going to happen to Lee. That's part of the reason there's so much resistance to this.

----------------------------------------------------------------

People get worked up about the Lee, Davis and Beauregard statues, but the Battle of Liberty Place monument ought to make their heads explode. It truly is about white supremacy and opposing reconstruction. That thing really ought to be removed. Or at least put the original inscriptions on display so people can see the level of racism it originally intended. (It's been sanitized to be less offensive at least twice.)

Oddly enough, it's not covered by this court ruling because David Duke filed suit back in the late '80s or early '90s and got some federal ruling about it being historic. It had been taken down when the Rivergate was demolished and Harrahs was built. The city warehoused it until Duke won his suit. Now it's on "display" between the Aquarium and the flood wall, I believe. Not exactly a high traffic area.

You don't see too many people waving obelisks in the name of southern pride.

Well, those few years weren't that insignificant. New Orleans was one of the biggest and prosperous cities in the U.S. before the war, and by far the largest in the south. That ended after the war and during reconstruction.

There are without a doubt some folks who'd love to be teleported back to antebellum times, or at least to the Jim Crow era. But what annoys me is that if a vocal minority bitches enough, they get their way. I think it's disgraceful that John McDonogh is only know as a slaveholder to many people and his name has been removed from most of the schools he paid to have built. The guy donated ~$750,000 to have schools for white AND black children built in N.O. and Baltimore. He established a system where his slaves could earn their freedom and transportation back to Africa. The guy did a lot for black people, but many blacks only know him as a slaceholder today. If they know who he is at all.

If only they'd gone to class and studied at one of McDonogh's schools, they might know Andrew Jackson and Stonewall Jackson weren't the same person.

It looks like from now on it'll be up to the statue of General Albert Sidney Johnston to keep watch over the Yankee invaders in New Orleans.

It's gonna be hilarious when they come after Jackson. Lee isn't a city icon, Jackson Square is. It's a huge tourism site. I can't wait to grab my popkern and watch the show when it happens.
