Agreed, and I'm fairly indifferent until people tell me I should hate them.

You may has well have based on the following convo:

Slap in the face of the unity of our nation. I take offense to that.

That's laughably irrational. And surprising since you usually aren't irrational.

Sorry I like my USA in one giant piece

Pretty rational.

That's why I'm always so careful to differentiate that it's the cause for which the confederacy fought that I take issue with being glorified. On the micro level, the reasons for which people fought/bled/died were far different (as is the case with most armed conflicts).

Let me make this clear for you:

The cause for which those monuments stand is a slap in the face to the unity of our nation. That's not irrational--the confederacy existed as an attempt to end the country as it was constructed.

I never said the statues themselves are dividing the USA.

Don't "may as well have" me. I'm doing my damndest not to leave things I say up to ambiguity.

Why?

So they stand for the Confederacy? I was unaware the Confederacy was still a thing.

You're saying it right now.

You're failing.

And in the spirit of such, I think it would behoove us to be loathe to place the cause of the vanquished on a pedestal.

The statues were built on money donated from ordinary people. They were erected to memorialize all the soldiers who fought not only in the Army of Virginia, but in the CSA as a whole. Part of the reconstruction effort was to ease the tension between north and south and reconciliation between veterans and it fit in with that.

The CSA soldiers deserve just as much memorialization as those who fought and fell for the Union.

They stand to honor those who fought for the Confederate cause.

Incorrect.

I disagree.

But, then again, this is the crux of our debate, now, isn't it?

Wow.

That's low, Tbird.

Disrespecting warriors, no matter whom they fought for (as long as they didn't commit war crimes) is low.

Say it in a way I'll understand, because I don't agree with you.

You could have said no much easier.

And yet it is somehow threatening the unity of present day America.

I disagree.

I've put it in the plainest terms possible. Multiple times.

quote:

because I don't agree with you.

That's your prerogative I'm accustomed to folks disagreeing with me.

You could have said no much easier.

It wasn't that difficult to grasp the first time I typed it, mijo.

Shitty attempt to re-frame what I said, but props for the attempt

I disagree.

Then it would appear that we have reached an impasse

The actual name "New Orleans" referencing Philippe II is racist, the St Louis Cathedral, the fleur de lis. The list goes on and on. We need to dismantle it all.

I agree. We need to petition the Parish Government to allow a contest to rename these streets. Bye bye Bourbon and Royal.
