Honestly, I don't think even Christians (when you get right down to it) really believe in prayer. Do you ever see anyone sitting around praying for things like limbs to regenerate or someone covered in third degree burns to suddenly have their body heal back to normal? No, because we all know that's not going to happen if the whole world prays for it.
People only pray for obscure things and if they don't happen, then it's just God's will. The Christian God has it made. He gets all the praise when things go well and none of the blame when they don't. It's impossible to frick up.

Yes, why pray for something you know won’t happen? I do however pray to have the strength to endure and to get through something like this.
You know if after passing I find out all of my prayers were in vain, what really have I lost? What did my prayers hurt?

You've lost the time spent on those prayers.
Look, I have been all over this planet. I have been to Muslim countries, Hindu countries, Buddhist countries, etc. The vast majority of people believe what they do because of how they were raised. It's as simple as that. And most people in the southeastern US are either 1) so damn isolated from other cultures that they can't see the role it plays in religion or 2) they are so scared of mortality that they will cling to any hope that there's life after death.
Most of religion is about culture, ignorance, and fear.

The Christian God supposedly interacted with humanity in some pretty substantial ways back when ignorance was rampant and there were no recording devices or mass communication.
Now that everyone in the civilized world has a camera with them at all times and we can communicate instantly from one part of the planet to another you don't hear about cities getting burned up by fire and brimstone from the sky.
I don't think that's a coincidence. I think those stories perpetuated during a time of great ignorance, word of mouth communication, and little investigation. Now that society has matured a lot, you don't hear about these things anymore. But I think that because we are so afraid of facing the day alone and eventually dying that the concept of God will last much longer than it really should.
A civilized society still believing in the divinity of Jesus is like a 20 y/o who still believes in Santa Claus. It's detrimental, embarrassing, and at some point you have to grow up.

No I don’t believe pray can change ANY situation like that but I do believe prayer won’t hurt. If that’s what someone has to do to get through something why be an jerk and challenge that?
Secondly, why is my time so important to you? Why is whatever that gets people though things causing you such strife? Why do you feel the need to change this about anyone?
Prayer is whatever a person says it is. I can be a quiet expression of hope. I just so happen to believe in God and express it to him.

You're mistakenly assuming all Christians view the bible in the same way and take it literally.

If I were out in public with a megaphone trying to discredit prayer or Christianity then maybe I would be a jerk. But this is a message board (where challenges are encouraged) and I didn't even start this thread.

I don't run around promoting atheism, but I do think the world would be a better place if we would all move on from the religious mumbo jumbo and invest completely in this life. You don't have to be religious to be productive, fulfilled, and to have empathy for your fellow man.

With the exception of here, I’m very productive in life. My religious beliefs hasn’t harmed anyone and it certainly hasn’t harmed me. You do your thing and I’ll do mine, just be kind.
