I'm not talking about just a vacation. I mean enough time to understand how the people there are toward Americans who come there to live, cost of living, best areas, any other things someone should be aware of.

They don't like Americans because we voted Obama into office twice.

An actual Irishman told me that.

I've been for a brief time and am going back this summer but you've already ruled me out as being helpful. Good luck

I've been lucky since coming in. First assignment to Alaska which has been great and now on to Germany soon.

I spent almost a month there with one of my college teammates who was from there.

I saw no ill will whatsoever towards Americans. They seemed to actually thoroughly enjoy having me, especially in the local Pubs and Restaurants in his small town. Dublin had so many tourist they didnt even notice

quote:

cost of living
Food and other things were more expensive, as is all of Europe. I wouldnt say the rent prices were astronomical from what I remember his brother saying. Like a medium size city here in America. Nothing like New York or San Fran. Now when I was talking to his Dad, buying real estate seems to be extremely tricky there. Due to there bank crash, it is very hard to get a mortgage. You have to have a considerable amount to put down from what he told me.

best areas
My friend lived in Delgany, County Wicklow and I loved it. It was about a 30-40 minute commute to Dublin(commuting is very easy there by car or public transit). But the town was perfect. It was exactly how I expected Ireland to be. Local shops, open space and plenty of pubs and golf courses. My recommendation would be to stay outside of Dublin. Dublin to me felt more like any other generic city.
