Bad arse kids destroy nice wood floors. I’ll wait til the kids are out the house then do something nicer
I'm not even kidding when I say this will be one of the most important tidbits of knowledge I pass along to my own kids. Be it furniture, flooring, other upgrades, don't waste your money until your kids are at least 15-16yo.
Wife and I put a ton of loot into our house when our kids were younger and it's amazing the damage they've done. It's turned into a HUGE waste of money.

In addition to luxury vinyl im looking at the water resistant laminate. Specifically the Dreamhome X2O laminate at Lumber Liquidators. Some great looking floors. Not waterproof like luxury vinyl but more water resistant than standard laminate.

Buildirect.com is really good for any type of flooring. I am a contractor and I strongly suggest solid core vinyl plank over laminate. It looks great and comes in 100s of colors. AND the ease of installation is FAR easier than laminate. You can cut it with a utility knife and never have to get up off the floor 10million times to go to the saw. It is exponentially easier on the tricky parts as well. It's also WATERPROOF, not "water resistant "

Luxury vinyl is the only answer here.
Luxury vinyl goes down quick and you can cut it with a utility knife

Yeah, I got some $4/sq retail coretek for about $2.70 from some place I found online in the Northeast.
Only issue was I didn't pay attention to the fine print and it was a freight delivery. I was supposed to have have equipment to pull it off of his truck but luckily I talked him into just dropping it in the road. Ended up rolling almost a ton of flooring up my inclined driveway in the middle of summer.

This is EXACTLY why I’m not looking to invest a whole lot into it now. My son will destroy it by himself, and he’s at the age where cousins and friends his age are starting to come over often.
But those dark bamboo floors at Depot had my soul connected to them.

I did a DIY solid hardwood floor a few months back. The prices I found online were the same as I found at a couple local flooring and tile places. We ended up going local because no shipping and I was able to easily return the extra box I ended up with.
The install was easy from a technical standpoint, but tedious. As someone else mentioned, there's a lot of bending over and getting back up. I was pretty sore the second day. I bought one of those floor nailers on Craigslist and sold it for the same price on Craigslist after I was done.

Tell me more about this solid core vinyl plank

It is a floating floor just like laminate. It is as durable as laminate. You can get the same look as laminate that is much easier on your feet. It is much easier (and cheaper) to install or repair. It is superior in every way to laminate IMO
