I recently saw gran Turismo and want to purchase a rig. Never learned manual driving before but interested in learning.

How realistic is the manual in game vs real life?

There's some good info in the F1 thread on MSB.

Also if anyone in here wants to give any recs for a VR rig, i'm all ears.

Good point on VR. My thought is screen probably isn’t enough for it

You can prob go buy a beater with a manual for cheaper than a driving simulator rig.

Meh the point of it is to have fun and track it in a game vs taking the effort to take my car out. Also instead of a cool sports car, my wife bought me a giant suv instead so no fun

Depends on the quality of your rig. The low end one feel like plastic and the throws are too short and the clutch pedal is too light. It gets better as you move up the price range with that ultra high-end being fully adjustable and can feel just like the pedals and gearshift in an actual car. It is all about the money, like everything else in life, though again like everything else there are some that offer more bang for the buck than others.

I’d expect this OP to be an Aggie.

Let me know if you got recommendations. I see rigs from 500 to 1500, can probably drop a grand on it

A triple screen set up is incredible. One decision point is how you'll play - console vs PC.

VR is good and can be lifelike but many people don't enjoy as much. The headset can get hot and feel heavy with longer play, a number of reports of headaches but ymmv. Others swear by VR.

You can spend anywhere from a few hundred or less depending on what you already have and can easily get into the thousands.

rent a car with a manual tranny and learn with it, so you dont burn up the clutch on your car.

learning when and how to shift is easy, the hard part is learning to alternatively press all 3 pedals in sequence while you are parked on a bridge, without it rolling back and into the car behind you.

Unless you’re in some sort of outrageously expensive simulator, I can’t imagine getting anything close to realistic. Riding gears is what’s fun about a manual transmission. Feeling the torque on each gear is what it’s all about.

Yes. Run GranTurismo, F1 2019-2023, and iRacing.
Get a decent PC, logitech wheel & pedals, a headset and you're good to go. With games, probably $2,500

I remember the first time I was in this situation. The anxiety was unparalleled.

If you are willing to stroke the check they can run into the 6 figures.

Some of them can be incredibly accurate (and specific) keep in mind F1 drivers use them because testing is so limited.

OP's first question is console or PC and then set a budget for the rig.
