Same here. But the earliest another provider will start my service is Monday. But at least me power has been off this whole time, so I guess I've got that going for me.

Well that’s a little different than my past experience and therefore my expectations for this.

Fair enough. Props for you at least getting the ball rolling

THe market rate "POLR" Plan of Last Resort isn't that bad. It's like 22c/kwh. Compared to the $9/kwh that Griddy customers are paying right now.

15 cents for north Texas right now.

So the bit of the story that “no one is taking on anyone new” is BS.

Yeah, I thought it would be quicker too. But I guess companies that offer same/next day service are overloaded? The one I chose was same day then once I submitted my request for service they came back with Monday, but I have 3 days to cancel so I'm going to keep looking until I find something quicker.

Griddy also offered a deferred payment plan to spread the cost of these unusually high prices out over 5 months of needed. My power has been off during most of this, and I've got gas heating/kitchen/water, so while my power was off I could still get by.

I did get a taste of what's to come from my griddy bill as they continued to charge me even while my power was off. I didn't get hit with anything like the lady in the OP did, but like $50 in about a 24 hour period. But I spoke with a griddy rep and I'll get all those charges credited back. So I may end up with only an extra $150 or $200 that I can spread out over 5 months, if I want.

I have months with griddy where I only use about $50 worth of electricity where I have normally paid at least $150 with other providers.

I joined Bulb Energy, which is month-to-month with no contracts as well

I decided to give bulb energy a look after seeing your post. Not sure how I feel about completely renewable energy.

Wait, you actually get to choose your energy provider on Texas?

I either get SWEPCO, a NG generator, solar,or nothing.

Yes. The infrastructure is handled by a specific company. But the actual providers fight for customers. Incentives, various plan types, etc.

Free nights and weekends.
Highest 5 days removed from your rate.
Credits once you pass certain thresholds of usage

Etc etc.

And contracts that lock in your price for potentially years.

None of the “here is your rate, deal with it” like in LA.

I’ve got more important shite going on in my life than to be messing with electricity plans all the time.

The worry for me is that once your term plan ends, you automatically go month to month at market rates. So if you forget to renew and some crazy weather event hits you could get screwed. I suspect a lot of people are going to be in for a big surprise when their Feb bill hits.

You need to check out energy ogre. Its $10/month and they use algorithms to automatically renew/switch/shop without you doing anything. Everyone I know who has used it has saved way more than $10/month.

To the original thread question - I just got my bill through yesterday...about $50 more than last month. We never lost power in this storm and were gone for a week of the last billing cycle so I'm very OK with that.
