We’re in Gatlinburg for vacation currently and just got an alert that Wears Valley has an ongoing brush fire. High winds are expected from now through the night before heavy storms move in. Some areas in the mountains may see up to 90mph gusts.

Gotta say I’m a little freaked out. The fire’s smoke is headed towards Sevierville, which is the direction I’d drive to get to Knoxville if we had to evacuate.

Yeah it’s been upgraded to a full on wildfire. Rain’s not expected until 2am. A lot of land is going to burn.

It's windy in Knoxville now and really dry... hopefully this storm tonight knocks it down but it will burn plenty before then.

Worst case head to Knoxville for a night for some good beer and see what happens.

Fire is a natural regenerative process. This will be good for the area in the long run.

We left for Asheville. It’s probably fine for where our AirBnB is, but with 10 more hours to go with increasing winds and no rain, we decided not to risk it.

I’m across the park in NC and we’re definitely keeping an eye on it. Hopefully they’ve learned from the last fire in the area. It was totally mismanaged and the authorities waited way too long to evacuate people.

I live about 20 mins from wears valley. Smoke is thick even here. They aren't going to be able to do anything with it on the terrain it is going over I wouldn't think. That is mainly resorts and cabins with roads that don't get really to much else.

Yeah just read it’s 0% contained and the rain isn’t going to be heavy enough to put out the fire. Sucks big time for that area.

The workers in downtown Gatlinburg were freaking out. One guy in tears said his house had just been finished and settled last August after losing everything in 2016.
