Looking for the cheapest decent kit.

Hornet
Dang, back in 7th grade or so, I had the Hornet and my best friend had the Frog. Good times.
His Frog always had issues with the independent rear suspension.

Yeah, the Frog's shocks are a little quirky and air bubbles in the body really have an effect. If the trailing arms are lubed properly, that also will affect it. The Frog's gearbox also likes to grenade itself. Thorp put out an aftermarket diff that was fantastic. If you find one nowadays, you're paying about $100 for it. I've already blown up one set of gears on my Frog as I'm running a vintage Losi motor in it.
Hornet's are a blast to drive with a Sport Tuned motor, they're quick, but bouncy. Honestly, my best runner is my Grasshopper II Super G. It's fast, nimble, no under/oversteer and the suspension is great. My Fox is also a great runner, but suffers a bit of understeer on the pavement.
There's only a couple I won't run. The Falcon being one since they'll never re-release it. Heck, I even run my 935 Porsche from time to time which makes the collector snobs go apeshit

Awesome. I had half of those.

Where are you located? I may have a deal for you, as I bought a starter plane with radio, and another smaller plane. Don't fly either one anymore. One is Super Cub . The other is p51 micro (without the stabilization)

awesome collection dude. Just picked up a 1/5 scale used on craigslist the other day. Gonna tinker with it a little bit. Has the 30cc 2 stroke motor on it.

The Parkzone stuff is fantastic as my local hobby shop carries tons of parts. I have a Night Vapor, micro Piper Cub and micro Mosquito. Absolutely love flying the Mossie with it being 4-channel and with my DX5 radio.

If you are in Baton Rouge, I would also suggest going to Hobby Towne and have a look around and talk to them. It's owned by a family and they are nice folks. They have a fair selection of R/C planes and cars (both electric and gas). You should compare their prices to Tower Hobbies (online store) but usually their prices are fairly competitive. I like helping locally owned stores so for a couple of dollars, I would buy from them.

The last slimer (nitro) I had was an RC500 back in 1989 as far as cars go. Just sold off my Super Tigre. 60 as it was doing nothing more than being a paperweight.
My Dad has done R/C and control line for nearly 60 years. His father (my grandfather), was a regular at the local RC field in Baton Rouge and control circle there at the old airport park. Went out there everyday for decades.

I raced 1/8 scale nitro buggies under the bridge in Destrehan for while. Got too expensive to keep up. LiPo batteries and brushless motors are those things eve faster now.

just bought the Parkzone Sukhoi with Spectrum DX3 transmitter from Hobby Town in BR. Haven't flown it yet. I'm scared. BTW,I used to be Kyosho sponsored back in the day. Raced a tricked out Ultima. I was the only one against all those Associated RC10's

For your first plane? It's toast.

That's awesome! I raced on-road pan cars competitively in the laste 80's in the midwest. Was sponsored by Bolink and MRP. I only had an RC-10 for a short while but it was a blast. Then moved on to an Optima.

Had a Fox racing car. Still have it.

Used to race at Loupes of of Florida BLVD. Had a carbon fiber chassis on my Ultima in the 80's. That was unheard of at that time.

best advice is to not even get into it.
expensive and 75% of the time somethings broken. You get bored with stock and just driving around so you start to mod and jump ramps and its a money pit.

Ok, so you've flown before.
On this plane do yourself a huge favor and move the clips on the control horns for the elevator and ailerons down so that you have only 1/4" travel for the elevator and less than a 1/8" for the ailerons. Do this until you get real comfortable

I have an awesome old Kyosho. It's a FW-03 GP Four. The four stroke engine is great, but I haven't run it 10+ years. 2 speed with clutch idle, fan cooled, sealed diffs on both ends, disk brake on the center shaft, and every ride height, camber, toe adjustment you could imagine. All of the radio components are on the upper frame section for easy removal.
