I would include it. It’s an interesting story that he’d likely get asked about in interviews. So if he enjoys talking about it, include it.

Just pull a Elizabeth Warren.
Are you 1/2500 anything other than a whitey?
You're now that.

That's a hell of a story, but he better has the grades and numbers
I'd include it. We see students with stories about their cancers and all. It's what shapes you and a big part of your life.
Now if it's a 3.0 student, average mcat and that story vs a 3.7 student, high mcat, and a decent story that makes them halfway decent.
Still gonna favor the 3.7

I read hundreds of them when I served on my medical school admissions committee.
I can only remember 1 or 2 of them. Those were done by people who had unique personal stories.
If have an average American life, your personal statement is insignificant.

Can I ask where he is trying to go?
He will not take MCAT until this time next year, and then he will be picking schools to apply to, based mostly on his score. Right now, he HOPES to apply to Stanford, Vandy, Emory, and maybe NYU. I think he has some back-up schools in mind in case he doesn’t knock it out of the park on the MCAT, but I won’t mention those. Who knows what his wish list will look like 14 months from now when he actually submits his applications....

PS will never open the door but can close one. It needs to be solid and it needs to be written by him. In it, he needs to explain how he’s come to the mature decision to pursue a career in medicine. And everyone has some anecdotal reason why they want to be a doctor. He needs to explain what he’s done to show that he’s weighed this decision and accepting of the next 7-12 years of training
