Kids with massive tissue loss in an extremity, not a kid who's missing his distal phalanx

What tasks are being hampered for a 9 year old by having a partial middle finger?

That's exactly what I said it wouldn't do. You quoted my post that said what you are asking for wouldn't add function to his hand/finger.

I've got a study going right now youd be perfect for. If you need any orthopedic procedures let me know, costs would be covered...

I'm failing to see why trying out some devices that might help him is a bad thing ?

If I was missing half a finger, it'd be nice to have something like this on hand (pun intended):

Again, I don't think you understand how kids that age work. He's currently self conscious about a smaller middle finger and the solution is to strap a 3-D printed finger to make up for his differences? Everyone gets ragged on in lower/middle school. Be glad he isn't the dirty kid, the kid never wearing a sweatshirt during winter, or the poor bastard that is late to hit a growth spurt in a few years.

Shouldn't you let his father worry about such small things anyways?

I don't get the desire for a prosthetic. It runs the risk of encouraging him to treat his finger as something to conceal in order to "blend in". Better to just rock with whatever fate gave him.

Best analogy I can come up with is guys who spend thousands on hair plugs that anyone can spot from miles away.

If it were a major physical impediment (like missing a limb) that would be a different matter of course, but for something minor just roll with it.

I tend to agree with you shiz, but don't you think that will come with time no matter whether he has a prosthetic now or not ? Once he is older he won't GAF just as he hasn't up until this point... I understand what he is feeling now and wouldn't want that anxiety to hold him back or get worse..

They probably make fun of him in math class because he can only count to 9 1/2 It will pass as he grows older. Most people want even notice. I lost part of a finger but I was an adult.

I have a bone graft from my hip that forms my pointer finger. It was done at the time of the injury tho. I doubt it could have been done had any significant time elapsed.

I think it's something he will grow out of. Had a friend who was born with a partial left arm, having only a nub below the elbow. He had a prosthetic as a kid and it was a hindrance. He actually was a hell of a pitcher and would keep the glove underneath his arm. Our flag football team, made of 10 guys, was called 19 hands.

An alternative option to a traditional prosthetic that I read about several years back:
This guy in Europe or maybe Australia lost his thumb in a work related accident. He had his doctors remove his penis and sew it on where his thumb was.
This might be an option you want to discuss with your nephew and his parents if his freakish deformed half finger has him feeling self conscious and like half a man.

There is a company called artech laboratory. The make silicone prosthetics. Never had to make a finger for one like you are asking about, but they have done excellent jobs with a couple ears we did for patients. LINK give them a call and see what they can offer.
