My mom is 81 and had a stroke two weeks ago. She had to go to a nursing home to get rehab for a month. The place looked ok at first but turned out to be a nightmare. She’s back at the hospital now with more health issues but they are going to return her to rehab in the next couple of days. The insurance she has only pays for certain places. She can’t move the left side of her body after the stroke. Does anyone have some good recommendations ? TIA

Check out Ollie Steel Burden Manor on Essen if she is needing short term rehab to return to home.

Go to Medicare.gov and find nursing home compare.

You can look at survey history, staffing levels and star ratings

The Pearl at Jamestown is where my uncle stayed towards the end of his life. My mom was a nurse and had rave reviews. No clue about cost. It's on Perkins between Siegen and Highland.

If she has money & will be private pay I’d suggest a private pay only facility but they are not cheap, insurance may cover some of the cost since she’s in “rehab”

Try Golden Age in DS
They have a waiting list but not sure if that applies to rehab

This is not a recommendation, just me saying that anywhere you go is going to be shite but this is the nicer of the shite holes around DS

Also try House of Grace if she can’t go home after rehab is completed
It’s a very nice place, kinda like a very small assisted living

after touring some this is the truth unfortunately. The state really needs to start inspecting these facilities

No one is going to take care of your family the way you think they need to be taken care of

These places don’t pay the staff anything so they don’t care
After having dealt with 3 different facilities over the past 4 years I have to say Golden Age is the best in DS as far as a large facility

We toured House of a Grace a couple of years ago & I have a family member there now, I would recommend it if your mom is unable to go home after rehab

The one on Lee by Highland is very good from what I’ve seen.

this is true but she was at one in Hammond where they didn’t (or wouldn’t) check on her after pressing her help button and crying for them. She laid in pain and urine all night. After meeting with the director she assured us it wouldn’t happen again Two days later same thing, so I brought her a cell phone. She was calling my sister every night to come help. My sister found the aides all in a vacant room at 2 in the morning. My sister said every light( help light) was pushed on just about everyone’s room

I am sorry to hear that

It’s sad because no one deserves to go through that
I have another Aunt who is in a pretty bad place, the family is trying to move her to where my grandfather is in DS

It’s bad because so many of the people there aren’t in their right minds so the ones that are seem to be treated the same way
They started giving my Pops puréed food, he told them he didn’t need that...they ignored him, he didn’t tell us until he got pissed because they served pork chops & he didn’t get one
It was an issue with the computer but they didn’t believe him
If he had a nurse / aide that knew him I think they would have looked into it more, but turnover is so bad the employees aren’t there long enough to know the residents & know who is in their right mind

My Pops is sharp, he remembers everything but at 93 he cannot care for himself
We have had plenty of issues but they could all be considered minor, just not what we think is right
We take care of all laundry & his supper
We are not bringing in as many snacks for him as I realized last week his food & drinks were being taken, no neglect like what you described

Now, when my grandmother had dementia a few years ago that is another story that I don’t want to get into, it’s just terrible what those people go through & how they are treated

Speaking from experience, if your mom has any assets, prepared to get destroyed.

Golden Age in DS, right off the interstate

It’s a newer facility, the previous location flooded in 2016
They are all private rooms, not huge but enough for him
Like I said they are all shite holes but this is the better of the ones around (I have no experience with any in BR)
There is a waiting list but that may not include rehab

He is private pay @ 200.00 a day + medicine
While in rehab insurance will cover the rehab & a portion of the daily rate

Steer clear of any SNF contracted with Reliant Rehab.

Trust me.

About 6 years ago I was in an accident and had to spend a year in a nursing for for physical therapy and wound treatment. At 45 years old, there is no words to describe what I went thru. For the first few months I had to wear a diaper and it was a normal occurence to sit in my own crap and piss for hours because the aides were too busy talking to one another. At first I would speak up which would lead to even more abuse.

Luckily for me I became very close friends with the administrator and director of nursing after about 6 months. After that my complaints were dealt with immediately. The director of nursing even put a refrigerator in my room and would go buy me my own groceries.

From my experience, the best way to pick a nursing home is if you know someone who works there or a friend of a friend situation. Other than that its pretty much hell on earth. They all tell you how wonderful they are but its a bunch of shite. If you do complain the higher ups will just classify you as not in your right mind or a trouble maker. Whatever you do make sure you get to the phone number to the facilities ombudsman and take a daily journal documenting everything.
