Don't go the Hem/Onc route then.

Got bit about 3 weeks ago. Now have painful swollen arm pit lymph node.

Happened to me when I was 17. Except was actually a scratch, not a bite. The lymph node in my elbow puffed up nicely, it ended up being slightly bigger than a golf ball. I had no idea cat scratch fever was real until that happened.

Was excision and drainage necessary? I mean, do you think antibiotics would have been enough to cure the problem without messing with the lymph nodes?

I guess it depends on how long it's been swollen, location, severity, or a combination. Because if I remember correctly my doctor didn't even give me an antibiotic. Said it would go down, and to just give it time.

Wanted to give an update. I spoke to 3 different doctors and oddly enough, each of them said I should be on a different antibiotic. Cipro, Zithromax, and Augmentin. I was already on a Zithromax. Now Im on Augmentin too.

When I first posted, I had an infected finger and a swollen lymph node in my right armpit. The following day (Sunday) my armpit was more swollen and very painful, and I had soreness across my shoulders and into my neck. Today, which is 48 hours since being on Zithro and 24 hours since taking Augmentin, the neck/shoulder soreness is gone. Lymph node is still swollen, but not nearly as painful. I have a whole new respect for cat bites.
