Anyone have access to Carfax reports on a dealer account or some such?

My sis is looking to buy an occasional use vehicle to tow a bass boat and has found one that looks promising; however, I'm interested to see the history on it since the guy selling it bought it.

He got it for his wife about a year ago and she supposedly doesn't like it now. Weird thing is, they seem to have bought it in Florida. It's weird to me because I wouldn't have gone to Florida (from north Georgia) for a car that my wife wasn't sure she wanted. He has a Carfax from the dealer he bought it from, but I want to know if something happened to it since he's owned it.

I have the VIN.

TIA

Yeah, I don't feel like dropping $40 on every car my sister looks at. It's not for me or I would.

Nah, you have to pay the $40 or whatever.

You're right to be suspicious. I would check it thoroughly.

Have a dealer run the VIN through their warranty lookup to get a service history.

In other words, if it's a Ford truck, bring the VIN to a Ford dealer, etc.

Buy the monthly subscription, it is worth it when looking for a car.

Also, realize a carfax is useless unless insurance gets involved. So if it flooded in their yard and the guy dried it out himself then you will not know.

If his wife wrecked it and he paid the repairs out of pocket, you will no know.

Are you asking me to break the law for you?

Good idea there. I will definitely call the local dealer to have them check that out. Good call!

Yeah, I know. Still worth seeing, I would think. But it's not a be-all, end-all.

Possibly? I really don't know. Maybe just don't do it if that's the case?

Not suggesting it is the case but it wouldn't be the first time a woman (or man) has decided they didn't like a car/truck after a year.

And BTW, I went looking for this option first and only saw a 6 report option for $99. Not seeing a monthly-unlimited, which I thought they used to offer.

No, not at all. You're right. Just a gut thing, but it's probably fine.

The did used to offer it but I think they stopped. It may have something to do with tons of guys running them for everyone on their car forums. I probably ran a hundred or more for guys on the M car and 6speedonline forums back in the day.

Find a dealers website that includes the “free car fax” or equivalent VIN check on their website, where you click the link and it opens the report. Use that link, locate the vehicles VIN in the link, replace with your VIN...Voila! Free report.

I’ve done this in the past but not sure it still works.

While I understand your skepticism, I think the precedent is already set in regards to women and changing their mind.
