should go ask a Veteran about their experiences with the VA.
I'm a veteran and I have had nothing but good experiences at VA.
"The VA health care system performs similar to or better than non-VA systems on most measures of inpatient and outpatient care quality, although there is high variation in quality across individual VA facilities, according to a new RAND Corporation study.
Examining a wide array of commonly used measures of health care quality, researchers found that VA hospitals generally provided better quality care than non-VA hospitals and the VA's outpatient services were better quality when compared to commercial HMOs, Medicaid HMOs and Medicare HMOs. The findings are published online by the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
“Consistent with previous studies, our analysis found that the VA health care system generally provides care that is higher in quality than what is offered elsewhere in communities across the nation,” said Rebecca Anhang Price, lead author of the study and senior policy researcher at RAND, a nonprofit research organization."

As said, why go through the military for this if that's all you want?
It's the main thing not the only thing. I would like to know about his service record to keep for family records.

Looks like a Kabuki Doll (Kabukiya Doll Store) my daughters have several as they were passed down from my grandmother. They have a watermark underneath.

YOu can try Aardvark Research out of St Louis.
Not sure they will be able to get it for you but may be worth reaching out and asking the question.
I have used them in the past to get a client's DD-214 from the archives. It did not take long either, less than a week.

Check Louisiana state archives within the dept of state, they have a lot of WW1 service abstracts. I found a great grandfather's army records that way.

Bugger. I appreciate that, but he was from Ohio. However, I'll look into their state archives and see if they have anything.

I submitted my Dad's WW2 record request 2 years ago. Filled out all the info correctly. Took 2 years for them to send an email saying something was missing on my request, but didn't tell me what it was. So, nothing.

I was in a VA hospital years ago and received good care. Before going to one I was warned that many bad facilities exist only become some congressman forced VA to spend money in their district. Other good facilities usually in urban centers are well-established parts of the local medical community. Do some research before picking a facility.

Isn’t it recommended that veterans file a copy of their DD214 at their local courthouse? As a backup copy?
Don’t know if it’s a common occurrence… but you may have luck there.

My grandfather was given a doll as a gift from the Vietnamese widow of one of the men he lost in Vietnam - after he helped her relocate to the U.S. after her husband was KIA. I'd be curious to see a picture
Eta I posted before seeing the pic

I'm very confident he bought it in Japan. I guess it could have been made in Vietnam.
He was born in 1916 and died in 1979. Was too old for the Vietnam War. Draft card on Ancestry shows he filled it out sometime between June 10th 1940 and June 9th 1941 since his age says 24 on the draft card. I would assume it was after congress enacted the Selective Service act in September of 1940.

I could have my stories mixed up and will double check with my aunt. It could have been Korea.
Although Japan would make sense too - he was stationed some of that time in Okinawa, Japan. The widow would have routed through there on her way to the US.

Get former LA Police Detective Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch to run it for you. He knows a guy at NPRC who will step around all of their requirements and send him an unredacted copy of all documentation, which is also against their policy.
Went back and saw your giesha doll. Beautiful art piece. Googal image shows many similar dolls. Appears they are offered for sale on ebay for $80 up to $200 dollars.
