Anyone familiar with Georgia property law?

I asked in the Georgia board but this gets a lot more traffic.
About 8 months ago an old military friend was transient fleeing a warrant in Florida. I found him sleeping homeless in Savannah and put him up for a bit. About 2 months later he took off presumably arrested for meth or
Similar reasons and returned to face his Florida warrant also. He didn’t have much actual property but his motorcycle was left her with no instructions or any indication of when or how I should expect him to get it back.
What is the law exactly about how long before it becomes mine? I know I have to at least try to find him and inform him of it it’s locarion and ask him to retrieve it correct? Then after that as I understand it runs through department of revenue in which case they would find ownership is mine assuming the sufficient time required by law has passed and he hasn’t been found.
Can anyone advise?

I don’t know anything about law but you might want to run the vin numbers and make sure he actually owned it and that it’s not stolen.

I actually did that in an attempt to find him thinking he was most likely in Florida Jail. They wouldn’t tell me if he wa incarcerated but that he did at one point own it but hadn’t paid a tag fee in 3 years

Do you have the keys? Is it registered? Is it worth having or is it a piece of crap? All important questions before you go down the road of trying to own it.

I have the keys. It isn’t currently registered he was way behind on tag fees but from the limited amount I’ve found online if department of revenue deeds it to me I can register it myself. It’s not a pristine GSXR and I’m past the point of really enjoying riding bikes anymore I would sell it that’s my goal. Just poking around I could get between 2500-3000 without much work

Google “Florida Mugshots”
Then enter a name and their arrest record will come up.
After finding what county he was last arrested in, Google “ Florida County Jails”. Go to the county and most county jails put that information out for all to see.
If he is in a state prison, Google “ Florida Department of Corrections”. Then search.
Good luck.

Only the OT could accuse a man that housed fed and clothed his former Army squad member of long conning his bike when I am a psychiatrist who makes plenty enough to not have deal with this and would’ve much preferred he fixed his life

You're willing to do this, but not store his bike? You'd rather investigate Georgia law to see if you can assume ownership, then take the time to find a buyer in hopes you can make a quick buck.

It’s not that. 1) It is principal I gave home everything he could have possibly needed to get a second chance and even gave him private at home addiction counseling off my work clock. I have no clue what he’s in for but I know it involves meth at the very least so I wouldn’t be surprised if he served 5-10. Idc if I donate it or sell it I just don’t want it cluttering my garage for that long my kids and wife have stuff too and didn’t blow a perfect second chance.

Call a Storage Facility, several to verify. Abandoned storage unit owner/manager will most likely know those rules. Also call some auto shops, they could know too. Body Repair and Transmission shops kinda thing.
It's not uncommon for customers of those places to just never show again.
When I worked for a finance company in Tulsa one of their long time managers owned a storage business too. I switched to another company and the office I started managing was located backed up to his units. That guy drove over in the 1968 Mustang Convertible someone abandoned at his business.
When I worked at the bank I was out doing some field work at an auto shop we had business with. Owner showed me the Indian MC he got through abandonment and the unique 1960's Amphicar he was about to get title to through abandonment that needed a transmission.

Thank you for actual advice that can pay off. I was skimming internet blurbs while I prepared for my patient load this morning and it seems GA standard is 5 years. There are certain exemptions and one seems to be felony crime

Why you want it lol? From what my lawyer friends have given me tidbits this morning if he is in for a felony charge and unreachable I only have to wait 90 days. Then the DoR can declare me owner and able to obtain a title
