I had a bad cough last week and the week before, doctor suspects it was the flu but I went in on the tail end of all sypmtoms sans the cough. It was a constant, dry cough. In the mornings when I first woke up I could always hack up some of the junk in my chest, and it was always bloody. They took a chest X-ray and blood sample and didn't find anything abnormal, so I was prescribed two different cough medications and an antibiotic. Fast forward to today, my cough is mostly gone and I don't have any other symptoms, but for the last few days it feels like there's a butter knife stuck in my chest. Constant dull pain that turns to a sharp pain if I move the wrong way, cough, sneeze, take a deep breath, etc. The pain was in my upper back last week and wasn't too bad but now it's in a concentrated spot and it's pretty terrible. Reading about it online, if it's just swelling then it sounds like there isn't much that can be done sans taking NSAIDS, which I can do on my own. If there's a fluid buildup then they stick a needle in through your back and drain it, but I would imagine that's done as a last resort/extreme case.

Tl;dr- I suspect I have pleurisy and want to know who has experienced it before and how you got rid of it

I've had it two or three times over the years. My pain felt more like a large butcher knife instead of a butter knife. It was explained to me as a cold settling in your back instead of the chest. Time was the best medicine I took to get over it. Lasted about three days for me.

I was prescribed hydrocodone syrup for the cough. I know why it's colloquially called "lean" now.

And yea, when I cough it feels like someone is stabbing me with a butcher knife. At rest it just feels like there's a butter knife lodged in there

It's fricking awful not being able to get a deep breath. I figured time was the answer, this is the third day I've had these symptoms, I reckon I'll give it until Monday

A friend of mine had it. He takes arthritis meds that weakens his immune system. Maybe your immune system is low.

Had it at the beginning of this year. Doc didnt even give me anything for pain. Went on vacation with it. It was awful. It just took its course and eventually went away. Probably lasted a month-month and a half. Good luck.

I've had pleurisy and it is EXTREMELY painful. It hurts to take a breath at all. I had to go to the ER with mine because it was so bad... It developed after a bout of strep threat.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like time is the treatment. I guess if I'm still hurting next week then I'll go in to the doctor and make sure there isn't a fluid build up, apparently that can cause a collapsed lung. Otherwise just hope this goes away quickly

Last time I was diagnosed with pleurisy (sp) I ended up with the exact same symptoms 3 weeks later..... straight-lined 4 minutes, electrocuted twice... and 5 bypasses fixed my "pleurisy".

EXTREMELY painful.

You bet. When mine hit the first time I was bent over nailing the bottom strand of wire on a fence. I couldn't straighten up for several hours. My buddy helped me bybasically shoved me on the seat of the truck and took me home.It was painful as hell trying to stay in that position from the truck until I got into the bed at home.

If I had been by myself I have no idea what I would have done - pre cellphone days.

Sucks! wife had it twice last year, pain lasted for 4-5 weeks each time. All they did for her was give her pain meds and told her it would get better eventually.

I had it during my junior year at LSU. Spread to my heart lining and almost killed me. Very intense pain - it hurt just to breathe. Never recurred.

My wife's grandfather went to the doctor and the doc asked him, "Did you ever get Pleurisy?" He replied, "Mama used to give it to me all the time, but not so much anymore."

Had it once in my early 20s. It started out with typical cold symptoms. It progressed and became extremely painful. It hurt just to breathe. It lasted a few weeks. Was prescribed Cipro. Doctor said it was an infection of the lining of the lungs.
