Its apparently a step above a DUI in severity.

You speaking from experience?

in severity
Considering that many on the OT consider DWI a capital offense, I don't think that is possible.

I live close to a lake and people here rack up BUIs like they are candy

What is the difference?

In some states, it's different based on BAC in the blood test. If it's under a certain level, it's DUI. If it's over, it's an OWI.

Yeah the progression from least severe to most severe is as follows:
DWI
DUI
OWI
DWI
DUI
OWI

Never mind it is the same in Louisiana.
I saw a guy get one on a boat and that was his charge.

That just seems like odd phrasing. "His BAC was .10, he wasn't driving that car, he was operating it"

Yeah its interchangeable in Louisiana. Pro-tip: dont ever tell an an officer that you just had one beer because you can technically get a DUI in Louisiana for that. Driving while intoxicated is defined as "driving under the influence of alchohol or controlled dangerous substances or when a person's bac is over .08". People have been convicted for just admitting to having one drink even after refusing to blow and refusing field sobriety tests because the statute only requires that u be under the influence

Yeah the cops on Lanier give them out like Halloween candy here in ATL.
In GA a BUI is supposedly worse than a DUI.

You can also get a dui in Louisiana for being under the influence of a non-scheduled drug obtainable with or without a prescription. My buddy had a client who was arrested for dui after admitting to taking benadryl.

Finally, my post about the progression of severity (i.e. dwi, dui, owi) was a joke. Sarcasm is sometimes hard to convey in the written word
