No, he said they have internet, but it is expensive as hell and slow. They apparently have a way of pirating Starlink though.

Fair enough.

Oh I see they had slaves there at one time. I’m out.

I'm really surprised that given Britain's weakened state that Argentina hasn't made another move on these islands.

It's actually right at 6000 miles

have you went to any of the other islands "near" there?

St. Helena Island, where Napoleon was exiled to by the British, is the closest land to here and it is 700 miles away. Never been there. Population here on Ascension is about 800ish and about 50% are from SH. They're known as Saints.

On the Falkland Islands they said that in the event of a serious illness/condition like cancer, they would be flown to the UK to treat….is it the same where you are? I am summing y’all can take care of most types of emergencies in your clinic?

A connection to Louisiana:

AI Overview

Acadians were sent to the Falkland Islands (then called Îles Malouines) as part of the British deportation (Le Grand Dérangement) in the 1750s and 1760s, with French colonizer Bougainville establishing a settlement there with some Acadians, though most later left for other French territories like Louisiana (becoming Cajuns) or Uruguay, leaving a small, temporary Acadian presence that eventually faded.

I bet every real British person has thought about moving there over the last decade or so

I wonder if they will ever decide “enough is enough” and re-assert control over their country.

Below refers to Ascension Island

We’ve had Starlink for about two years now. It’s been a blessing and a curse. Great for the obvious reasons, but a curse because everyone has become less active and, therefore, less activity after work and on the weekends. Way too many are gaining weight.

We have a softball field here and the surface is a clinker volcanic ash…don’t dare slide.

Same here for UK citizens, which includes the Saints and any foreign national that would get quicker/better care when compared to their home country (S. Africa, Kenya, India, Philippines, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Turkey).

There’s a small hospital here in Georgetown with two doctors, one of which is a general surgeon. We had a Saint baby born today. There are about 80 kids here. If you’re out of school and 18, you have to find a job here or leave. It’s a “working island”.

The hiking here is literally endless. There are over 60 known hikes that can be completed and stamped (you stamp your book) at the midpoints. The Letterbox Walks. Many are uncomfortable because you’re walking across various sizes of lava rocks for an hour or more. Some are dangerously and I’ll ever do them again.

There are wild sheep and donkeys here. The King’s donkeys. If you kill one with a car, it’s a £10,000 fine. The damn things will stand across road and dare you to hit them.

People are allowed to catch the sheep and eat them. I’ve eaten a few of them as lamb curry that some of the Indians have cooked.
