During WWII there was talk of shutting down professional sports. FDR advocated the status quo to maintain a sense of normalcy. MLB started playing the national anthem before games as a patriotic gesture. There had been instances before that but AFAIK this was when it became a standard practice.

This is nothing new.. They have a large fan base in Canada. Josh Allan is my QB is a big money league I play in, I will root for him to do well.
