Those fundamental cracks have existed since the beginning of the nation. That you are only seeing them now means that maybe you weren't exposed to the history. It's only been about a generation and a half since the Civil Rights Movement. Before then, the US was effectively an apartheid state. There's been a lot of progress made, but progress is also uneven, happens in fits and isn't necessarily linear.

Things were far worse in the summers of 1919 and 1968, yet we survived. Some of you need some perspective.

So please tell me about times like this. In all seriousness. I’m 23 and this is the first time I’ve experienced such tension in the streets.

I just feel it’s so tense now that something stupid is bound to happen.

There were more riots during the summers of 1967-68 than there were instances of civil unrest in all of the 90s and 2000s. Red Summer of 1919 had 38 incidents of civil unrest. 1968 was an incredibly fricked up year too.

America hasn't ever really been all that harmonious a place. After the CW, for example, you went straight into the labor movement, and things like Haymarket. The largest pitched battle in US history since the civil war was The Battle of Blair Mountain, where 10,000 striking miners in West Virginia faced off with a mixed group of people hired by the coal mines, like the Pinkertons, to the West Virginia National Guard and eventually the US Army. The US labor movement especially has had a tumultuous history that was only temporarily sidelined because of the possible association workingmen's unions had with the USSR. But before WWII, strikes were extremely common, and often ended in violence.

Race relations haven't fared much better. You've had overt race riots every decade of this century up until civil rights were won. Even then, the civil rights movement took place with lots of violence, from civil rights activists going missing to church bombings to Fred Hampton being straight up murdered. Not to mention things like the assassination of several key civil rights leaders.

People telling you that things like this never happened are ignorant of US history, or are trying to manipulate you to some end. Protests have been pretty common since 2008 too. We've had an incredibly tumultuous history, but it isn't any more tumultuous than most other nations. Other nations had labor movements turn to violence, usually in response to violence from the state.

I'm not even mentioning how fricked up the history of colonialism was.

There are a lot of factors going into the current protests, but there is a lot of precedent for racial based anger. There have been around 100 race riots in this country, and the spark has usually been some interaction with police that turns deadly.

there are no black people in my rural mountain county.

Latinos are integrated.
they work the farms and hold jobs being bilingual.

peace in the valley.

whatever little tension there is is from tourists coming to fish. the boat dock areas are full of people with no mask bs-ing about their big catch.

we have zero people in icu.
none in hospital.
1,400 requested tests. 19 had it. all but two got it working out of town or from spouse worked out of town. only a couple not recovered yet.
