A-men on that one.
There's a special place in my heart for the people who do triathlons and rarely speak a word about it, but those people are few and far between.
Triathlons can take a lot of training and commitment. I have a lot of respect for those who do them. But just don't fall into the trap of letting it dominate your life. Seriously... for a good number of these people, it's hard to have a conversation with them about anything else.
Not every triathlete I've met has been a narcissist. But the worst narcissists I know are all triathletes. Just food for thought.

If you have a road bike, get some tri handles to attach to it before going and dropping $1500-$2500 on a tri-bike.
See, I hear this and I definitely take it into consideration. But I'd also be interested in a tri bike just to ride for exercise. I like my road bike, but I never group ride. Seems like if I got a bike that fit, it would be a good bike to just make my solo rides on even if I wasn't competing often.
I need a bike upgrade. My aluminum frame, Tiagra component, cyclocross bike was a good first bike. But now that I ride the road much more than I thought I would, I want a dedicated bike. I was hoping to use my current bike anytime I actually go out with a friend or group. Then use the Tri bike for my solo rides which would make up 95% of my rides. But I've heard some people are super comfortable on them and some can't get used to it and only really ride on race day and the days leading up to a race. But the ability to go fast and the fact that they just look so good makes me want to overlook all the negatives

This year I did two sprints on 3-4 days a week of "cardio". I joined the gym for general fitness/weights but decided to have a little structure to the cardio rather than just mindless minutes/hours on machines.
I ride once a week, swim once a week and run a couple times, sometimes making two of those a run/bike brick. Including lifting twice a week that's a little over 5 hours.
Obviously you won't win on that kind of training, but finishing mid-pack was no problem.

Start out with a Sprint-Tri (or Mini-Tri) to start out.
