Been to 37 as of Thursday. Missing Alaska, Hawaii, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Some notes:
North Dakota - southern border has some good elevation. I 94 on up might as well I 10 from Lafayette to Lake Charles.
Montana, Wyoming, and Western South Dakota - all are fairly mountainous. All over a mile up. Wyoming has a couple of points of 8600 ft and higher.

N Dakota is one of the few I have left. Is there anything (worth the effort) to see or do?

I have only been to 9 states. Only 42 more to go

What do you count as been to that state? Let's say the only time you've been to Texas is driving across the Sabine and immediately turn around. Does it count? Or let's say you drive across Louisiana by I-10 or I-20 and never stop. Do you count LA? Or if you've only been to Alabama through I-10 but stopped for gas. Does that count?

One summer we hit all the lower 48 in and 3 or 4 weeks. My dad was an OTR trucker and I spent summers on the truck with him and we just decided it would be cool to see how fast we could touch all 48.
He also owned his own truck so we told dispatch the plan and it happened. It happened faster than I thought it would.

If I’m physically on the ground to which I can identify what state I’m in to count.
Only airport:
California
Tennessee
Only driven through (no stops):
Delaware
The other 34 states I’ve been to have either included overnight stays or some form of transaction. (Gas, food, etc.)

I count Cali even though I was only at LAX for an hour. I did step outside for a few minutes to watch the sunrise.
