You can rattlesnake train your dog.

They have special training classes here

I agree. I would freak out too but I would try to remain calm and walk back to vehicle or town. Then get to hospital. Being an adult, you will have a good few hour window before things 'may' get bad.

Western AZ? I don't think that's a diamondback...Husband (who goes herping in your neck of woods) says it looks like a Speckled rattlesnake. Could be a Tiger Rattlesnake, but they're usually browner.

He is adorable.....but an idiot. I don't know how he would do in a training class...mainly talking about the lab. They may laugh if I enroll Butters in that class. Looks like they make your dog encounter a pissed off rattlesnake to make them scared of it.

Maybe I could just buy a baby rattle and use that to train Butters

The snake is enclosed in a box. So they can hear it rattle and smell it and associate that with "I need to GTFO NOW"

Just found out they even have rattlesnake vaccines for dogs now. Def gonna look into this. I bet it's pricey as hell though.

I got a bite from a rattler about 2 mos ago. he gave me a dry bite so I said thank you then went and got the 12 gauge

rattlers are thick at my place in Texas...dogs have all been bitten multiple times but they have been vaccinated. Benedryl and half a perc and they are up and around the next day

Seems like you could just play a recording of rattlesnakes and somehow condition him to be scared and avoid them. Not sure how to condition him on the scent though, since a lot of rattlesnakes won't start their rant until you're really close to them.

Husband wants to train a dog to find rattlesnakes, not avoid them.

How much is the vaccine and how often?

I live in a residential area...but hike in the desert/mountains often with my dogs. Can't believe I never knew about the vaccine.

I was a little inebriated so I went inside to lay down for a bit. Wife convinced me to go to the hospital. The leg turned black around the bite, but I guess copperheads aren't high on the scale of venom potency. Nothing like a rattler.

I've had a dog get bitten and it survived w/out treatment. As long as the dog isn't super small or get's bitten on the throat, it should survive it most of the time. Most animals can deal with nature a lot better than humans can. I've heard prices of anti-venom being from $40,000-$80,000 for some people at hospitals.

How could you tell it was a dry bite? Did you know when it bit, or just because you didn't get sick?

My pug is 20 lbs, would imagine it would kill him.

My lab is 75 lbs...and survived eating a ton of toxic mushrooms(had to have medical attention right away though). Vet told us if my pug had eaten them...would have likely died and they wouldn't be able to do much to save him.
