get a measuring cup, decrease the amount you feed him by 1/4 for a couple of days then decrease to half. Feed him this for several months and you will slowly see it come off. You may find this may become his new amount. Older dogs don't need as much as younger dogs.

Pretty much what he said. Find out the caloric value of the food you are using and get a measuring cup. I use Fromm's large breed adult for my GSDs and they give approximate feeding amounts based upon goal weights. You then adjust the feed amount for other factors like activity level and whether they are still intact. My oldest male was almost 100lbs and moved like a zamboni. Got him down to just under 80lbs and he's like a puppy again. Higher energy, faster, even got his jumps back and takes the load off of his hips and elbows. Just takes patience and consistency.

Feed less, play fetch more.

I have no idea how the hell a still relatively active dog gets fat other than health reasons.

I would imagine that as the dog owner you should be able to control everything the dog eats. Just don't feed him as much, and if you give him table scraps, stop, and make him sit across the room when y'all are eating so the kids and wife don't give in. We did the same for our dog, it's a simple equation.
