In the garden district. Baton Rouge. The door was always locked and they only let you in if they liked the way you looked. Samll Antique store in old house. Owned by two guys. Late 70s

I don't remember that one, but I remember the one that was in the building before it turned into the 13th Gate.

I thought the 13th gate was a sporting goods store back in the day.

Maybe it was before it was a antique store. Never spent much time downtown before that.

So it used to be Steinberg's? I always thought it was on Florida Blvd way back when.

Or, that big building that used to be a flea market, but I think the flea market was on the Airline not too far from KMart.

ETA: I think the place I was thinking about was called Coleman's Outdoors. Can't remember if it was on Airline or Florida Blvd.

Yes, it was called Steinbergs. My grandad used to take me there when I was little. All I remember is that they had a giant stuffed polar bear and a few machine guns.

There was a flea market where the community college is. It was called the Deep South Flea Market

Steinbergs was pretty cool. It was sort of a Bass pro Shop before that concept existed. They had this full sized stuffed polar bear standing on its hind legs which fascinated me as a kid.

My dad used to take me there a lot as a kid. He loved going to Steinbergs and the Pastime on a Saturday afternoon.

My mom would go look around in there when it was the flea market. I hated it except there was a guy that had a sports card table. I would spend my time there.

That downtown Steinbergs was the only sporting goods store in Baton Rouge back in the 50's. I went there often with my dad. They had a very large stock of fishing and hunting stuff. As a kid, I loved walking all around that store and looking at all that outdoor stuff.
I remember walking into the big front door about 1970 and there was a monster size Mercury outboard just inside the door. I remember wondering why anyone would need/want an engine that big...... it was 100 hp. A year or so later, I saw one on a wooded flat bottom boat down near Lake Verret.

This my fault, but Geezus. There are already threads on Steinbergs, I wanna know if anybody remembers the ANTIQUE STORE.
Thanks to the poster who said he could never get in, though. My mom bought a Civil War sword there.

Steinbergs

I met Roland Martin there once and got his autograph.

Once the downtown store closed and moved to Sherwood Forest, it lost its character.

I used to ride my bike downtown and go to Steinbergs. I'd wander around the store looking at all the taxidermy and WWII weapons on display.
I saved up coke bottle deposit and allowance money to buy my first pellet gun from there.

Yeah, I'm old.
