Just curious how the OT baller of substantial means gets into collecting art. How do you know which artists are good investments? Where are the best galleries?

In the popsicle stick house genre, early 90s is where I put my focus. A lot of good pieces from that era.

I have a few. Collected mostly local artists from galleries on Royal/Magazine. I love my Craig Tracy.

How do you guys go about it? Is it all about the aesthetic appeal, or do you give any thought to the pieces as investments?

I will shop around and compare what the artist pieces are selling for on average, but no I didn't buy any of them as investments. I bought them because I like them.

I don't "collect" art in the way you would do baseball cards or comics.

I'll sometimes go to local galleries, starving artist shows, random sidewalk sales in the quarter, etc. If I think it looks good, I'll buy it. I'm not really worried about the return if I sold it later. I don't spend a lot of money on them either. I think the max I spent on a painting was like $350. That was just because it was at an auction, and I really wanted it.

I collect art...I have 40+ oil paintings that I've bought over the years, and my only advice is NEVER buy for an investment - only buy things that you enjoy looking at. If they bring a smile to your face daily, they're worth it. I've paid anywhere between $25 and $7,000 for each piece and have no assurance whatsoever that any of them will ever appreciate in value. Anyway the point's moot as I'd never sell them. I bought them because I like looking at them.

Oh, and women dig them - shows that you're a classy kinda guy.

Went to a local art show and the artist was a total smoke. Bought a painting of hers for $700, asked her out and ended up dating her for like six months.

I invested in the pussy and it worked out.
