Or if you're near a volcano, it's going to blow.
If near the coast and the earthquake's epicenter is underwater, you may have a tsunami problem.

Nevis was listed as affected on earthquake tracker. Of the 4 or 5 that affected St. Maarten the only ones we felt were the 3.8 this evening and the 3.2 one in the early AM. It woke me up but I just thought a large 747 type airplane was making an emergency landing so I rolled over and went back to sleep. I can deal with the earthquakes even if they are annoying but the tsunami shite ain't cool (and of course some arsehole posted a video of the 2004 tsunami on fb). Especially since the school is located on the lowlands part of the island, but apparently it would take a pretty big eruption to produce a tsunami big enough to get us. That cat 1 hurricane storm surge had me nervous though. The golf course became part of the ocean for an hour or so and a cat 2 surge and my apartment would have been under.

St. Maarten is the friendly island and they don't try to rip us off too much. I guess the locals get there fair share of ripping ppl off with the multiple cruise ships docking everyday during the high season. Tsuamis are much more likely and significant near subduction zones where one plate is being pushed under another which pushes the other plates upwards in response. Underwater motion is up/down and creates the tsunami wave action (offshore Japan, eastern Carribean, Juan de fuca plate etc). Earthquakes along divergent and transform plate boundaries are much less likely to produce tsunamis due to the nature of the associated plate motion.

You can have an earthquake near Ok City from fracking and there is no tsunami.
tsunami is a reflection of moving land mass under water.
the wave happens when the land moves.
slipping causes them.

After doing some research outside of TD, most say the lieklyhood of a tsunami is low unless it is a Mt St. Helens type eruption but just to be on the safe side I am going to keep some floatees in my backpack.
