Where in Dacula are you looking at? A good portion of Hamilton Mill is considered Dacula and it's a very nice area. Overall not a bad area, Mall of Georgia is real close for your wife, Braves AAA team is real close, schools aren't bad, will depend if you are zoned for Dacula, Mountain View, or Mill Creek (that's if you have kids).
How often are you going to have to go to the Perimeter area? Realistically you are probably looking at an hour communte time during peak hours, not so much at off hours.

Marietta and Alpharetta are basically interchangeable. .
I don't know if I'd say that. Both good places though.
Agree.
I grew up in Marietta/East Cobb and it's a great place to raise kids. I'd suggest this area over Alpharetta because the only way to get to Alpharetta is up, or down 400, depending on morning vs evening, and that's a complete shitshow during rush hour going with traffic. Most of the top end of 285 is bad during rush hour, but at least with East Cobb, you've got the option to get to 75, 400 and 285 relatively easy, as opposed to just being stuck with 400.
Marietta is getting better with things to do - i.e. food/drink, but it's still the burbs, so you're going to mostly have chains. Not sure if that matters or not. That goes for pretty much everything not in town. I'm in Decatur and don't plan on leaving for a long time. It's a much higher cost of living, but it's worth it to me.

The drive from Alpharetta to the perimeter at 8 am during the week during school takes like 30 minutes tops. Getting from Marietta to the perimeter has got to be hellacious and anytime I can avoid 285 I do.

The simple fact is where ever you live in Atlanta you are going to hit traffic unless you live super close to work. Some areas may be better than others but there really are no traffic free areas anywhere close to Atlanta.
If you're lucky you have flexibility and can time your communte to make the best of it. I work from a home office but travel quite a bit. I always fly out early in the AM andI can get to the airport in 60 mins, and it's a 50 mile trip.

Perimeter and Dacula are two different areas and many miles apart. I live in Johns Creek. Public schools are really good, local traffic is meh. When I go to Midtown, I much prefer taking 85 over 400. I find 85 is a breeze in the morning from 285 on down. 85 above 285 is always a mess.
Unless you're looking for open land, I wouldn't go all the way out to Dacula. Plenty of reasonably priced places much, much closer in.
Why don't you consider renting an apartment (pretty much anywhere north of the loop) for the first six months? It'll give you ample time to actually go visit all these places, experience each one's traffic, and make a more informed decision.

Unfortunately this is the direction we are heading. The real issue with this idea is my wife is due in late August and we don't want to have to move again, especially while she is much more pregnant which means I will have to do all the work. I'm sure we can hire someone to help but at the same time, I don't know if I want to do that in July or August.
