We learned some signs for our baby. I was amazed at how much he picked up that young.

Babies can learn sign language 6 months to a year before they can talk.
It's really crazy to NOT teach all kids baby sign.

A quick google says that you're 100% right.
There is now a new step 1 to my plan.

How hard is it?
Depending on the results of a test next month, I may have to get started.
I took 2 semesters in college to fulfill electives. First semester was easy and had a buddy and a hot girl in the class. Second semester was the "cut bait" semester. I dropped, but sheer laziness. It was not hard, I just had zero motivation (like having a deaf loved one). If I did, I can't imagine it being too difficult.

All the deaf people you know must be married.

Good job! It really is very beneficial. My sister is deaf, and I learned to sign before I learned to speak. Babies pick up on signing really quickly.

Thought it was crazy that LSU didn't offer an ASL course. It was actually one thing I was interested in learning while in school and I never got the opportunity to do it.
I took it at LSU in 2010 as an elective. It was way harder than I imagined but very cool.
We also learned about the deaf culture and community and all the debate between cochlear implants and technology advancements.
The hardest thing about ASL is its not just English signed, it's its own language with its own sentence structure, verb Co conjugations, etc.

I had know idea there were different sign languages around the world. Seems like it's one of those things that could be streamlined.

I was there in 2010 and settled on taking a communications disorder class instead, because an ASL course wasn't offered?. Which was still VERY interesting.

Yep. We thought our one year old signs for "more" and "all done" for when she eats. If she's still hungry when she cleans her plate she hits us with the "more" sign in prompted. Impressive that kids can pick up stuff like that before learning to speak.
