I've only been to Hong Kong and I thought it was awful with regards to the people; unfriendly and unhelpful. Amazing city in terms of landscape though. That being said, one of my best friends has a brother who has lived there for 10 years and loves it.
I understand that Hong Kong natives and mainland Chinese are far different, but I find the Chinese to be very rude and inclusive; both in China and in the Middle East. That's a big stereotype to cast, but it's my experience. I wouldn't want to live there, but I know a number of folks that like it.
ETA: I would reiterate that I have not lived there and I cannot give firsthand experience.
