Pirates are still active along the coast of Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea in Africa and along the Bonny River. I worked at a shorebase in Port Harcourt and all out work boats had to leave the dock no later than 4:00 PM. Got dark at about 8:00 and It took about 4 hours to sail down the Bonny River into the Gulf of Guinea and we did not allow our boats to travel the river at night. All boats returning to port had to standby at a bouy about 10 miles offshore and not enter the mouth of the river until daylight.

While working at the shorebase in Equatorial Guinea in West Africa, the EG Coast Guard brought in the bodies of three dead pirates that they had intercepted trying to board workboats. Unloaded them at the dock close to where we were loading our workboat. About 15 years ago, but I doubt much has changed since then.
