re: Anybody ever driven to Alaska?

I wore out my copy of The Milepost. It was worth it's weight in gold.

I wish I had taken a tour of Glacier Bay. Frankly, I can't remember why I didn't. It might have been the price, I don't know. I didn't fly to Brooks Falls because of the price. I distinctly remember vacillating over that choice.

I thought Sitka was badass. It was just a really cool place to me. I liked Juneau. I camped out at a BLM campground by Mendanhall Glacier, I think. I was there for a few nights, including the last night of tbe season (early Sept). That Sunday morning I took a hot shower and went to a place that was showing the Saints Packers game - it's an early kickoff in AK. They made great custom omelettes. I was clean and well fed. Can't remember if the Saints won or lost!

They just built the ferry terminal there about 10 years ago, so not sure when you were there. The day boat is also pretty damn expensive.

Same here. I love Sitka, one of the best kept secrets in the country IMO.

The only thing I dislike about it is the winter there is far more rain than snow. It doesn't get really cold, and I like a snowy winter.

I drove up and two years later drove back. Took the ferry from Bellingham to Haines junction then drove to anchorage. It’s pretty cool. Go in the summer time.

I drove there once from Russia.

I was there in 2002 or 2003. I'm almost positive there was no Alaska Marine Highway ferry route to Glacier Bay at that time, but I'm not 100% sure. I took the ferry from Homer to Kodiak (left my car in Homer) and don't remember it being very expensive, but it was a long trip - 10 or 12 hours, maybe?

I took the Kenai Star, an NPS concession operator, out of Seward/Resurrection Bay to Kenai Fjords NP. It was well worth the 90 or 100 dollars. We saw glaciers calving and a Superpod of Orcas. It was badass. Then, almost back to the dock, a bald eagle snatched a big ol' fish out of the water right abeam of the boat as if on cue. It was quite the sight.

I also remember that in addition to the boat fee, you could get a baked salmon lunch for like an extra $5. That was a well spent Abe Lincoln!
