This has been an entertaining thread to see how everyone views dining out differently.
Generally, If I'm out with my wife or a group of friends, it's as much about spending time with each other and enjoying the experience as it is about getting a belly full of food.
I don't want to be rushed in any way. I convinced my wife about 10 years ago to not open the menu right when we are seated. Let's have a order a drink and relax first.
I want a well paced meal and possibly an after dinner drink or dessert. Not sure why I would want to get out of a restaurant ASAP unless I was eating alone while on work travel.

No I usually drink and relax. Unless it’s a really special restaurant I’m not going to eat. I’ll pick at an appetizer and have a few drinks. I just go because the old lady wants to get dressed and get out of the house.

According to the board’s worst new poster graham Wellington, you’re just ordering a drink so you won’t be bored having dinner with your wife

I would say that 90% of my meals in restaurants are related to business travel, so I am generally alone. I really have no problem with the pace of the meal or even having to wait a bit to be seated. However, when I am done eating, I am ready to go. Nothing aggravates me more than having to wait 20 or 30 minutes after I have finished eating to pay up.
I do understand that most folks like to linger after the meal and talk...but waitstaff should realize that if you are not sitting with anyone, dead time just before the tip is assigned is a bad thing.

Sadly, there are quite a few who probably feel this way.

I hate the smell of food after I've eaten a lot. So, I get it.

As long as I have my phone with internet, I’m literally never bored. I get lunch by myself and will sometimes just voluntarily sit there on my phone for 15 or so minutes after I’m eating. However I try not to even glance at my phone when I’m with people.

Agreed, I view dining out as a social event as much as it is a meal.
I guess that makes me pretentious though
